@nathan hah. yeah. it's weirdly cultural. my guideline is basically - does this business have a "wear a mask" sign? are the patrons wearing masks? not trying to stick out even more than my obviously new york ass already does. even in the same small town here (in tennessee), we just went to a small indoor fruit / homemade jam market type place where no one but employees were wearing masks, and then to a grocery store where basically everyone was.

Here's the whole thing again:

The city of Jersey City has asked WFMU to prove that its programming has educational value, as a condition of keeping its tax exemption. This is a serious matter to the financial health of the station.

As part of this effort, we're asking our listeners to provide letters or emails explaining how and why WFMU's programming has not just entertained them, but has also provided educational value. The educational value can be related to the history and relationship between culture or ideas, or more direct value such as information about any matters of public importance. Tell us how you have gained knowledge through the time you have spent listening to WFMU.

This is a serious effort to address an important disagreement WFMU is having with the city of Jersey City. Whether you are an educator, a student or merely a student of life, please help us out with a thoughtful letter or email, and please keep them to 300 words. Letters should address the City of Jersey City, and can be emailed to helpus@wfmu.org by May 28th. Thank you for your help.

I love the mountains, and it's hard to beat finding like really cool bodies of water and waterfalls where there's also plenty of shade. With that said, there can be some really cool things down by beaches. The bays are underrated usually, and I love the more "natural" beaches, so to speak, instead of ones right in municipalities. It's nice when you're just surrounded by nature and wildlife like at an Island Beach State Park, Sandy Hook, or south Jersey natural areas like in Strathmere or Brigantine. Also Great Kills in Staten Island, which is one of my secret go-to summer spots. Never crowded, even on the busiest weekends. Also a protected beach, so you can swim. And now you can legally spark up in NYS anywhere that allows tobacco smoking.

Would love to get back down to Naples, FL. Was there briefly for a wedding one March and it was like another planet. So beautiful. Would also love to see the Pacific again someday; in 1997 I drove all the way out, IIRC, Santa Monica Blvd, parked, walked out to the edge of the water, and put my hand in the Pacific for my first-ever time. (Later found out a friend did the same on his first visit. We're both Atlantic Ocean adjacent lifers, so it must've been some sort of primal urge to mingle the waters.)

@Niall pretty humid! Unfortunately August is when the beaches get a little dicey, as the stinging sea nettles move in and the horse flies arrive. where we are (the confluence of the Magothy, Little Magothy, and Chesapeake Bay, just north of Annapolis) water is wide but not very deep except for the channels. You can walk in waist deep water almost a quarter mile directly from the shore.

Actually rate the RankinBass 'Hobbit' highly ! Then Bakshi started 'Lord of the Rings' ...not great. Then R&B did 'Return' - also not exceptional... But 'Wizards' is weirdly uniquely great. 'Heavy Metal' - just so much lesser than the Magazine - hard to get past that...

Ryansterlingvirtue, ha, I went there once! Swear I was just thinking about it last night. Went because nudity makes everything funnier. Was definitely weird when it was actually time to just drop my trunks in public though! Gotta get back some time. Nice spot too because I should be able to easily pick up TV signals from the Freedom Tower. Hope WFMU would come in, I guess on 91.1 in that location? There are some classic rock stations around there at least, and you can simulcast The Boss on MeTV (WJLP)'s frequency and get digital sound. Channel 33.13 has The Boss on radio while 33.10 is this really awesome weather channel with The Boss in the background. There are some other radio station simulcasts on that frequency too. You need extra-long antenna elements though because WJLP is a low-v channel on RF channel 3. The More You Know.
