A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Listening to this I see what Devo meant when they said that their early stuff was "dirge-like." Jerry Casale's fact-finding mission to CBGB's prompted them to speed things up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Rich in Washington:

The story behind this particular performance is pretty interesting. Somewhere, there's a Gerald Casale account of it and it's worth tracking down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

I worked for Jerry Casale - twice. He wasn't very Devo in regular life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
ultradamno:

There's a great anecdote, maybe from a Search & Destroy interview, about them playing a demo for fellow Kent State alum Joe Walsh and getting somewhat laughed at and ultimately a dismissive "you're either over my head or below it" response.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, I think Cleveland and later NY really focused Devo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

I'm gonna steal that: "I'm gonna go over your head and OVER it!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

They sort of conned their way into the show by saying they were a cover band. A classic Punk grift. Timeless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

They did retain Shrivel Up, at least. Their creme de la dirge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Scott67:

When are you just gonna say fuckit one day Rich; & stay on playing stuff while we all get wasted together?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Rich in Washington:

and now that I think of it, Alan Meyers quit because he didn't dig touring and by that time, had no actual creative input - was replaced by a drum machine on albums, so for touring, they found the Sparks drummer.
Avatar 10:56pm
Cp304:

well, thanks for the lesson Rich and Peeps.. love you all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

similar story with guitarist Bob 1. He sorta fell off the deep end and had little creative involvement short of touring. Mark and Jerry wanted to eliminate guitars altogether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

But having said that, When I first saw Devo in 1977 they were so far ahead of everybody else. They really knew how to command the stage when some of the bands they played with were still trying to figure out how to plug in their equipment.
