Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm alanr:

How exciting! an unexpected long long Long Rally tonight, and off to Germany we go....happily tuning in from a rainy Mexico City.
  7:06pm P-90:

Master McDowell! Always a pleasure, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Scott McDowell:

Thunder & lightning here in New Jersey. Bodes well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Long Rally. I'm sure the question on everyone's mind is "How many versions of 'Toxic' will we be hearing tonight?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Scott McDowell:

Sounds OK out there. ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Jeff Golick:

Uh-huh.

Drummers were/are in high demand.

bam bam bambambam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm chresti:

I just said that without knowing it for a fact. The drummers I know/knew always seemed to often be in more than one band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm alanr:

@Scott McDowell Can you post the links to the blogs you spoke about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm coelacanth∅:

same here chresti, the good ones anyway - or the ones that people like to be around...

but then i know a few bassists in several bands too, and this area, last i knew, is rich with good bassists

Hello. Pleased to be along for the extra-long rally!
Avatar 8:30pm northguineahills:

Ok, why didn't I know A.R.Penck did music?(knew of his sculptures)
  8:40pm headcleaner:

stepping out for a stroll... taking this music with me
Avatar 8:45pm northguineahills:

who's the vocalist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Scott McDowell:

Jeanne Lee
Avatar 8:51pm Listener Gregory:

That last piece (Part One) was remarkable. I am trying to figure out why I have never hear of this music.
Avatar 8:54pm northguineahills:

same boat, Gregory! (and I know the other musicians, and as mentioned before, I only knew Penck for his visual art).
Avatar 8:55pm northguineahills:

Peter Kowald! Saw him the day before he died. He did a duo w/ turntabilist Toshio Kajiwara that night. Couldn't tell who was making which sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Scott McDowell:

Incredible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm WR:

More more, we liking what we hear here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Scott McDowell:

Great, cuz we got more! :)
Avatar 9:28pm Listener Gregory:

You have thunder, I have dumb firecrackers. You win!
Avatar 9:31pm northguineahills:

I have shrieking banshee kids at the hotel pool, if that counts....
Avatar 9:32pm Listener Gregory:

@ngh, you lose! Ugh!
Also, this isn't still the Kowald trio, is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Scott McDowell:

Nope sorry! It's TTT again. AR on fender rhodes
Avatar 9:35pm Listener Gregory:

If I were at a party, and someone asked, "What about jazz today?", I would immediately move to another group of people and try something like "Who do you like for the playoffs?" (There must be some playoffs going on.)
Avatar 9:38pm northguineahills:

In my 20s, I broke up w/ two girls (at different times), b/c they told me they didn't like jazz. I immediately noped out both times.
  9:42pm Doug Schulkind:

This show is like having 15 steak dinners in one sitting. In a good way.
Avatar 9:43pm Listener Gregory:

My family has the bad habit of telling people I am a "jazz fan." Then I live in terror that the people will ask me to recommend some "good jazz" or ask what I think of the latest Boney James album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

i wouldn't call it quits with a woman because she disliked jazz. she may not know what jazz is.

like most people.
Avatar 9:47pm northguineahills:

My friends know my mantra, "every genre, every ethnicity, every geography, and every temporal period". If someone asked me for my favorite jazz, they probably won't like it.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

...in fact there's more of a chance i'd have to excuse myself if she "liked jazz"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

- like...bad rock music is bad, bad reggae is bad,
bad jazz is unbearable!
Avatar 9:51pm northguineahills:

@coel: Jazz is the gateway to every other genre, if you can dig it. (maybe not top 40 pop). Every woman I dated seriously were jazz fans (and most mirrored my music tastes). I agree, there is music of all genres that unbearable.
Avatar 9:53pm northguineahills:

if you're not intellectually curious to figure out jazz by your 20s, it's not going to work (damn, I'm in my 40s).
Avatar 9:54pm Listener Gregory:

Looked up that "Going Through" album. It seems to be readily available for $125 - $140 (incl. shipping). Limited edition, apparently. Hmm... I wonder if it's on iTunes for $9.99. (Just kidding.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

it's easy for you or i to see it that way, but i've met people who didn't start listening to music until they were 17-18 years old.
(poor upbringing if you ask me!)
so the timetable is pushed back
Avatar 10:02pm northguineahills:

@coel: I grew up in a fundy household. I didn't start listening to music until I was 16. It was mostly indie rock, classic jazz, classical classical, and hiphop. Then I saw the Sam Rivers trio and the Mathew Shipp/William Parker duo when I was 19, and the rest was history (i was already into Varese and Cage by the time I was 18)
Avatar 10:03pm Listener Gregory:

I have to bug out to try to find a girlfriend who likes this music. Good listening to you long-haulers, and thanks, Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm coelacanth∅:

good luck Gregory!
Avatar 10:07pm northguineahills:

laters,, Gregory, hope to hear you dj live in the near future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm WR:

Kowald was absolutely ripping the bass a few bars back. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm coelacanth∅:

are others experiencing dropouts every 2-3 minutes?
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

I once went to a girls' bday party when I was 21. She had Coltrane, Rollins, Stereolab, Wolf Eyes, Neu! and many obscure bands in her record collection. I thought I keep an eye on her. A year later, she made a move on me. We moved to NYC and were together for 3.5 years.
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

It keeps on dropping out for me, but so does my internet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

almost 4 minutes between the last 2 dropouts here; but less than 3 before that.
been goin' on all evening
  10:40pm northguineahills:

Internet wasn’t working, so I went for a walk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Doug Schulkind:

No dropouts happening in my neighborhood.
  10:58pm northguineahills:

“For a black writer to be born into the English language is to realize the assumptions which the language operates is his enemy” (james baldwin)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm WR:

i heard 1 or two short dropouts a while back. no stream pop in so i figured they were on my end.

i hope this program archives ok. Need to relisten a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

WR, for sure. looking forward to a few listens while the archive quality is still good (1 month)
  11:45pm headcleaner:

this has been epic, Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm coelacanth∅:

i took a break (partly because of the dropouts, partly because of schedule conflict) and the dropouts seem to have ceased
  11:48pm headcleaner:

I've been experiencing dropouts a couple of times an hour (and sometimes "tie-ups" lasting 30 seconds or more). Since at least one listener (Doug) hasn't been experiencing any, that strongly suggests its an ISP / neighborhood issue. (And if it gets better after 11p, that's because there's much less traffic throughout the system).
  11:50pm headcleaner:

(btw my "stroll" earlier ended up being from my chair to my bed... decided I wasn't going to walk out of the middle of this delightful set, after all)
  11:58pm headcleaner:

NGH: and yet few have made me appreicate the power of English language as well as Baldwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am chresti:

Thanks Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Scott! always Great to hear you!
tchau
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am WR:

Thank you Scott. Great music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm WR:

Yay! 5 hour show successfully in the archive. Delish!
