The original cut of Heaven's Gate was clunkier than the one that exists today. I liked it as I recall, but it was hard not to become lost while watching it. Like a Thomas Mann novel that runs off its rails. I think Cimino may have blown up quite a few real horses while making that, which is lastingly terrible if true.

Geez. Well - I think from the start appreciating Lydon - like Punk itself - was never about automatically agreeing with anyone.
It must be rough being a Professional Contrarian. A 24/7 job, right? So - Ive gone back & forth on him. He had said he'd never vote conservative & everyone who didn't;t vote was a fool... One wonders if coming to the USA for a good long while gets to people like him & Morrissey... People tend to vote their wallets, of course... I do remember when Lydon had a TV show briefly - VH1 ?? & he said then he liked Gingrich because he thought differently... An Ant-Government stance... & Gingrich destroyed bipartisan functioning & civil politics.
...Was just saying elsewhere in convo about 'rednecks' :
The problem with the Left of course is NeoLiberalism - & the Democratic Party has become so MiddleClass & Bourgeois.
Rawk'n'Roll - for example - as much as it aligns largely with Progressive ideals - has a *very strong* Anti-Bourgeois streak from its very origin story & deep in its DNA...

@ RR et al the thing about Lydon....is that yeah, maybe he's just being a Pro Contrarian when he came out in support of Trump (!!!) for "representing the people" even if those people were delusional and evil. I don't think he's "really" socially conservative, but has spent too many years getting high on his own supply of "anti-popularity."

Definition of Neoliberalism: Neoliberalism (or neo-liberalism)[1] is a term used to describe the 20th-century resurgence of 19th-century ideas associated with economic liberalism and free-market capitalism.[2]:7[3] It is generally associated with policies of economic liberalization, including privatization, deregulation, globalization, free trade, austerity and reductions in government spending in order to increase the role of the private sector in the economy and society;[4][12] however, the defining features of neoliberalism in both thought and practice have been the subject of substantial scholarly debate.[13][14] In policymaking, neoliberalism was part of a paradigm shift away from the prevailing Keynesian economic consensus that existed prior to the persistent stagflation of the 1970s.[15][16]

If I may: "Blues Image (of "Ride Captain Ride" fame) never receives credit for its role in ushering in, albeit unconsciously, the great era of what might be called “captain-philia.” As the ’60s slipped uneasily into the new decade, you couldn’t turn the radio dial without running smack into a captain. There was Grand Funk’s “I’m Your Captain,” Neil Diamond’s “Captain Sunshine,” the Doobie Bros’ The Captain and Me, Billy Joel’s “Captain Jack,” and Elton John’s Captain Fantastic, not to mention the Captain and Tennille. (And Captain Beyond, a great stealth supergroup, formed in 1971). Perhaps this profusion of captains, along with what would now be termed the re-trending of Jesus Christ, indicates that young people were looking for a steady, manly force to guide them."

I recently found a mint copy of Tull's Benefit in a five dollar bin and felt a pang of nostalgia. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Not sure I need much after that. Anderson produced a Steeleye Span LP and that was my teenage gateway into British folk rock. From there I got into Pentangle/Bert Jansch, June Tabor, The Watersons, etc, so I have to give him a bit of credit there.

Anybody remember the "Law & order" where the criminal was a classic rock guy who played Woodstock? Jeff Goldblum reads him for filth at the arrest: "You left your audiences wanting LESS!"
Avatar 11:54am
Joe McG:

I listened to this 100 times when I was a teenager. That accounts for the adult damage. I never played it on the radio, I don't think, so this is fun.

With this 'Hogfat'-like set you are perilously close to the edge of taste, @Joe. They definitely love this stuff in Syracuse / central NY though!
