A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Phillippe — sadly no! I am relying on my phone for the sounds that astound at the moment. I’m looking at a wifi-capable stereo receiver (recommended on twidder by a legacy FMUer no less) but my buying power is temporarily smooshed.

Fun WFMU fact: When in the living room, we listen via the WoofMoo app, casting it to the tee vee, which is attached to the stereo. On my phone, the tee vee _always_ displays the graphic for the Date the Spazz show. When my wife does it, we get that 3D WFMU logo.

Hey, Mike W.! Yes, we got out on the Hudson twice! Tuesday's was maybe a questionable decision -- it was so intensely hot. But still a nice time: a family of bald eagles, an osprey nest. A little cooler yesterday! We went out on the Hudson again, saw tons of great blue heron, a couple of osprey, and another bald eagle.

Poorly Planned Paddle Trips: Tonight on Date the Spazz!

Sorry to hear that Mike. When the time to get a stereo rolls around, look at Keiid. I had one shipped to me by mistake and I couldn't arrange for a return because I didn't have an order number and couldn't get a person to talk to. Anyway, it sounds okay and I think the price was in the $60-$80 range had I actually had to pay for it. Cheaply built, though, so not sure what the lifespan is

Threemoons, that's Long Island City Community Boathouse. They do their public programming in Hallets Cove in Astoria (by Socrates Sculpture Park). Their volunteers paddle up from LIC. I don't *think* they do public stuff out of the Annable Basin LIC location, but I might be wrong.

@KFHP the well-intentioned Maryland DNR decided to help out the Canada Goose population by introducing nesting pairs around the state. Rumor has it that they did not understand that the geese return to where they nested, not Canada, so now we are stuck with Canada Geese year round.

Good reminder on Rashied Ali’s birthday, thanks Bob. One of my best “I lived in New York” times was DJing at Tonic in the early-’00s, often seeing Rashied do a solo hit upstairs (midnight shows were common for a solo interstellar drummist). One night I stepped outside onto Norfolk Street to puff a dub cigarette and Rashied was parked across the street, doing likewise in his car. He waved me over and shared his joint and chatted. He was a good one.

Ulysses is difficult. I'm listening to it. Have a hard copy and the annotations. This is a first time so I'm just letting it flow over me without really knowing all of the background stuff. I love all of the mystical Catholic and Irish stuff.
Also love this Mdou Moctar.

Zinn had a habit of exposing hypocrisy in political reality...not a good habit in business. You don't want the pleb workers getting any "ideas"

Having spent a year at the DLI studying Arabic/Egyptian, I know that ya habibiti is hello my love. And Tire-on murwahi folk al-mintuka means helicopters are flying over our sector

@Woods That's the reason to read Zinn! Though I am admittedly not caught up on the latest edition of 'A People's History'.

Chuk: I forget if I listened for a "reason"! I was so amused and outraged at the same time that I made my way to a bookstore..

DJ Trouble, I haven't had a TV in over ten years. That has given me extra time (mostly time spent wishing I had a TV to watch).

"At the 'alter,'" -- nice, intentional or not.

On weighty reading: Jack Warner, of Warner Bros. studio, to director Mervyn Leroy, on whether he'd gotten around to reading "Anthony Adverse."
"Read it? I can't even lift it!"

TDK I was curious if maybe it was something more carefully reasoned than Woods' astute example. Guess I'm still a bit naïve at times, and curious for arguments sake.

@still b/p: Dang it! I wish that had been intentional.

Another jewel: David Markson! Start with Wittgenstein’s Mistress and then tumble into the This is Not a Novel trilogy.

to jump into the book discussion, I've owned a copy of Under the Volcano for at least 30 years and have NEVER been able to get past the first couple pages. I keep hoping though
