Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from July 2, 2021 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hello!

If I choke up singing this, I hope you will come on stage and help me.

WR:

volume seems low, particularly after the stream.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:05pm

The person who uses the studio beforehand must have a REALLY LOUD source or something
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
WR:

the mic that is on is not near you!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
WR:

i would guess you are talking into the wrong mic.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
diciassette:

The person who uses the studio beforehand must either be really tall or really short

I guess my speakers are not broken. Brownwyn can hardly be heard over the bed music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
doctorjazz:

Hi folks-having trouble with streaming on the stereo, got the phone playing.

I love Paul Desmond, but we need to hear BB!
This is a great idea for a show, though.
Avatar 7:13pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

aw man sorry did you guys get the whole spiel about hits and flops of each season or do i need to go through it again?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

Edgy radio mix!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
diciassette:

got it!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
TonyR:

The title on the playlist explains the concept well, but a few words, maybe. It was really rough hearing you. Just so we know no one is hurting the studio. :)
Avatar 🎭 7:15pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, I heard it. It was like we were rude audience members in a jazz club, trying to be heard over the music. I wish we were!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
WR:

music is ok volume now but the off mic break was hard to follow.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
TonyR:

Gregory, were you _talking_ to your sound system?
Avatar 🎭 7:16pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, as usual.
Avatar 🎭 7:17pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, maybe you can explain later how you identify the biggest flop of the year. Multiple shows must close after a night or two. Is it the investment to failure ratio?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

I think this the textbook for the class! www.amazon.com...
Avatar 🎭 7:22pm

Before I saw the listing, I assumed that "Been a Long Day" was in the flop. Good grief, what a song! (IMHO)

Beautiful version of In a Sentimental Mood in the background. That's not from a musical, though, is it??? Duke Ellington standard.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

I think we may get to see Sondheim strike out! (I'm following along with the program)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm glad you are playing kind of deep cuts from the hits.
Avatar 🎭 7:51pm
Listener Gregory:

I read a book about the decline of Hollywood musicals in this period, in which Hello Dolly played a part. The general theme was that The Sound of Music made so much money that every studio made a dozen horrible decisions trying to cash in on the supposed trend. Can't find the book title right now but will work on it.
Avatar 🎭 7:52pm
Listener Gregory:

One problem with Hello Dolly was that they agreed not to release the movie while the Broadway show was on, but the show just... Would. Not. Die. The interest on the film financing was disastrous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Webhamster Henry:

This is reminding me of being on a bus with the rest of the Hartt School of Music Kids Chorus on our way to putting on some show and they were all singing Fiddler tunes and I said "Hey that's last year's hit show.. this year's is Man Of La Mancha".
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
TonyR:

Brownwyn should have a stealth distress signal: like playing something from "Cats".
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
TonyR:

Streisand was too young for Dolly Levi. Matthau and Barbra also at war with each other.
Avatar 🎭 8:21pm
Listener Gregory:

If you did not know the musicals in this set, I’m convinced you couldn’t guess which ones were successful from these songs. “The Egg”??? Ha ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hiya, Bronwyn & bunch. You heard about efd's recent Sparks spectacular? www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
diciassette:

They sure wrote a song, didn't they!
Avatar 🎭 8:32pm
Listener Gregory:

No need to defend "The Egg," BB. It is a good song that actually advances the plot and ideas of the play. It just doesn't sound like it's from a hit musical. Nor Telephone Song.

I gotta admit, right offhand, I can't think of a showtune that was worse than that.
Avatar 🎭 8:41pm

Did he just refer to "a mushroom in the sky"?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

This is really bad. I'm clicky-starring it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Webhamster Henry:

How many wives in was AJL at the time?
Avatar 🎭 8:45pm
Listener Gregory:

Again, I would challenge anyone before the musical became a hit to predict that from Beauty School Dropout. Perhaps it all goes to show that the quality of the song is not the only or main determinant of success. It's how all the parts fit together.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
diciassette:

I am just now starting feel nostalgic for 1999, me!
Avatar 🎭 8:54pm
Listener Gregory:

A later revival of On the Town, in 2014, seems to have been fairly successful. Ran for 368 performances and nominated for a bunch of awards. Of course, the movie disastrously threw out a bunch of Bernstein songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
doctorjazz:

Such a fun show, thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

aaaaand this is is all we'll have time for tonight. Good night darlings and enjoy Via Galactica (and enjoy not being Galt Two-Flops MacDermot in November 1972!)
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

i say that with love of course
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

Thank you Bronwyn! I am intrigued by Filichia's comment about Via Galactica: "Maybe the checks didn't bounce, but the actors did"
Avatar 🎭 9:00pm

That was good fun, BB. Thanks!
