Recently read an interview with Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie done in 1989. They were in Paris to perform with an all star band of whom Jackie McLean was the youngest. The interviewer asked them what they thought about one of the promoter's statement that when they and others of their generation pass that jazz will be dead.

Roach, replied, "That might be a good thing, for jazz to be dead. Then people can approach this music as "Mr. Gillespie's music". Like people say "Stravinsky's music"."

Gillespie added, "The music is too deep to just go away. There are always new wrinkles. Listening to Ravel I heard a resolution I had not thought of before. So I put that harmony into another context and it worked. There are so many ways to get to the same place."

Jazz has long been a problematic term.

PS: I dig the music you are playing.

whoa, got pulled into work calls and the music got turned down and the show slipped by. I heard the comment you made about thinking you recognized some bit in the Moondoc recording. I'll probably re-listen since I got pulled away, will let you know if I recognize it.

Thank you and ruth, laters all.
