It’s on Hulu as well WR
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
WR:

OK, I have Hulu, so that will be it.
Avatar 10:04pm
Kris Holmes:

Hey everyone. I don't have Hulu so I went to the theatre & saw it, fantastic!

Kris Holmes:

I also don't own any 5th Dimension records lol

Larry has tried to convince me of their merits for years but I hate the balloon song and every other song just reminds me of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Matt from New Orleans:

But I did enjoy them in the film as well πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I lived across from Marcus Garvey Park for many years. It was called Mount Morris Park at the time of the festival. It still looks pretty similar.

That's cool Matt

The story I've seen a few times now in articles about the footage and what Questlove's done with it keep saying no one wanted the material across the years. And I can"t wrap my head around that. Even if it couldn't bring a motivated offer in some period after the performances, I don't see how that was still the case a decade and another and another afterward. Musically, culturally, historically, economically....seems like characters either with best or self-interests would have thought, "Oh, yeah, GOT to acquire that."

Kris Holmes:

There was an attempt in the early 2000s but they couldn't reach a monetary arrangement apparently.
Avatar 10:19pm

That makes a bit more sense.

I would expect licensing to be a headache?

I saw Mongo at Carnegie Hall in the late 80s as a kid. I saw him more as an adult but that was a formative experience for me.

Awesome

Not that I or anyone else has been very active on here tonight but I’m going to turn the lights out and lay down and listen to the rest of the show. Enjoyed the change of pace. See you next week.

great show Kris, was very busy tonight, but dug the whole show! Laters all.

WR:

it was cool to hear you say that Sonny Sharrock tore it up in the film. i saw him with Herbie Mann's band in the 70s. on a funk groove tune they gave him space and he went out. it was at the Houston Astrodome. After a few minutes of rhythmic chording a resonating noise filled the dome and then it went to a screech and finally a piercing bleeding sustained note that faded down until you could hear that the rhythm section were still pumping along. A few hundred of us went wild, most of the audience tried to pretend it didn't happen.

there is a live Mann album with a similar Sharrock solo.
