Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from July 16, 2021 Favoriting

Rich in Washington's avatar View Rich in Washington's profile Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

We snuck a tape recorder into The Golden Bear, a club in Huntington Beach in 1977 and recorded Bukowski doing his shtick. He had a refrigerator full of beer on the stage as his companion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Rich in Washington:

Is that the one that was filmed? Not the infamous Redondo Beach reading, but I think I've seen it. At least I've seen one where he had a fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Franco Twinkie:

Was the Redondo Beach show at The Fleetwood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Rich in Washington:

the entire one which was turned into the album Hostage was filmed and you can watch it online but honestly, whoever edited the audio for the album did a masterful job of making a really entertaining album. The whole film drags by comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Rich in Washington:

It was recorded at The Sweetwater in '80.
  8:48pm
davefromtoronto:

i think the whole reading is fantastic! the best part is his shit talking with the audience. it's on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm

totally, davefromtoronto! Love that album.
  8:50pm
davefromtoronto:

you're a big bukowski fan i assume?

That's what I remember best about the show I saw, some galoot going toe to toe with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm

I think I am. Love his stuff. Some of his recorded output is touch and go, though
  8:51pm
davefromtoronto:

you really were at a reading FT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Rich in Washington:

My top three 'instant party' records: Bukowski's Hostage; Tom Waits Nighthawks At The Diner; and Hound Dog Taylor's Beware The Dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Richy4619:

what's good, Rich! I'm always reminded of the Shoelace poem. it's the little things!! truth be spoken
  8:52pm
davefromtoronto:

were you ever on the bukowski.net website and forum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm

Hi Richy4619! Hearing The Shoelace on late night radio kinda did it for me. I was a fan ever since.

I wish he had read his novels in the manner of audio books. I love them, especially Ham on Rye and Factotum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm

Another Angry Samoans song aside from Right Side that kind of fits is Lights Out, gouging out eyes rather than drilling holes, but same intent

Yes. She was a pari mutual teller. She worked there and Santa Anita.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
WR:

My brother called Joyce Fante once in the late 70s or early 80s, I don't remember for sure. He said she was happy to talk to a random fan for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

WR, she said he didn't flirt, that he was pretty self absorbed, like most people placing bets. She said good luck once and he flinched. Sometimes he was in a good mood, other times no.

Interesting, that fits what he wrote, he wrote that he didn't want to talk with the tellers, just place the bet with minimum interaction.

I would imagine habitual horse race betters had all kinds of superstitions and rituals.

I had a neighbor who's boyfriend would see him at Santa Anita. He was a heavy better who didn't care about anything but horses, we use to ask him all kinds of questions just because he was such a jerk. One time he took his girlfriends roommates vacuum outside and lit it on fire.

check out Neeli Cherkovski's poetry if you like Bukowski. They were close friends who bonded on poetry and I daresay Neeli's poetry is even better than Buk's in a lot of ways (although I love Bukowski's prose and novel work).
