Avatar 8:08pm

sometimes I think of asking technical questions, like why did they have the big chorus?
Avatar 8:09pm
Eric R:

great work here on rhythm guitar
  8:09pm

I always thought "If this was the only 45 they put out, it would be a hit"

MOM WHIG, as Tommy James sang, there's a ball of fire in the sky.

Avatar 8:18pm

Avatar 8:24pm
Eric R:

I remember White Castle, 8 hamburgers for a dollar
Avatar 8:25pm
MOM WHIG:

Eric - me too - I used to go there in 1965 (DC) my first job for CIA
Avatar 8:26pm
SF Sorrow:

True Eric, only you must consider they were sliders the size of a silver dollar!
Avatar 8:26pm
Eric R:

true, SFS!
Avatar 8:26pm
MOM WHIG:

SF when $1.00 got you something
Avatar 8:27pm
SF Sorrow:

Indeed! 8 sliders!
Avatar 8:28pm
SF Sorrow:

100 pieces of candy!
Avatar 8:28pm
Eric R:

bubblegum!
  8:28pm
WLSClark:

Remember watching for the Maco's sign to change to 27...55...90 million hamburgers sold?
Avatar 8:30pm
MOM WHIG:

There are still 377 White Castle outlets
  8:30pm
WLSClark:

A nickel could get a pack of baseball (Beatles too) cards with bubblegum inside OR if you didn't have enough, a penney might get a Beatles pin in those turn crank things at front of stores....or just get some Pixi stix
Avatar 8:31pm
Eric R:

my first disillusion with the capitalist system happened when Superman comics (well, all of them) went from 10 cts to 12 cts
Avatar 8:31pm
MOM WHIG:

WLS I remember the same thing for McDonald's here in VA. The golden arches. The burgers were 15 cents, cheese burgers 20 cents, fries 15 cents
Avatar 8:31pm
SF Sorrow:

Pixi Stix's every day!
Avatar 8:32pm
MOM WHIG:

I still have my Beatle Bubblegum cards (minus the gum)
Avatar 8:32pm
Eric R:

me too, Mom.
  8:32pm
WLSClark:

I do too over 200, but they are sold to Gaylord now.
Avatar 8:32pm
MOM WHIG:

SF - loved pixie sticks
Avatar 8:33pm
MOM WHIG:

Eric - got one in my hand now - a few in my desk drawer here.
Avatar 8:33pm
sw2442:

I love the conversations about 8 burgers for $1...being born in late '69, I'm amazed how affordable things were then...5 cents for Beatles or baseball cards!?!? I pay $2-3 now for packs...I was born to late...
Avatar 8:34pm
MOM WHIG:

sw2442 - but still 69 was a great year for music -- so you can appreciate it now when you are older.
  8:34pm
WLSClark:

sw2442, Rubber Soul was a mere 3.98 when it came out!
Avatar 8:34pm
Eric R:

I'll go grab one, Mom...be right back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Woo:

My friends and I would find bottles on the ground then take them to a store and get a few cents which we would then spend on baseball cards and candy. We learned about money.
Avatar 8:35pm
Eric R:

3rd series, card #116. The Beatles bowing after their set.
Avatar 8:35pm
MOM WHIG:

Woo, I used to to the same looking for bottles since I was ten - they were building new homes in my area and also doing a new road -- the best were "the wooden crates" from coke - that would be $5.00
  8:36pm
WLSClark:

Woo, you got it! What was expensive then--and now? Well Billboard was 50 cents in 1965 and $20 a year. THAT was big money. Record Beat was only 25, Hit Parader, etc 35 at most, but Billboard was expensive.
  8:37pm
WLSClark:

Eric, send your want list to gaylord. Haha.
I can actually check and see if I have what you need, but they belong to him now.
Avatar 8:37pm
MOM WHIG:

Eric - I have #4, 8, 10, 12, 27,30,31,38,42,57,63, and 64. Not sure what series though
Avatar 8:37pm
MOM WHIG:

Love this Live for Today - Grass Roots tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Gaylord Fields:

@WLSClark @Eric R: Good idea!
Avatar 8:38pm
Eric R:

I've got the rest in a trunk somewhere. Many of those were taken in 1963, at least the first set.
Avatar 8:38pm
MOM WHIG:

WLS I sent Gaylord a few when I sent him cookies a while back.
Avatar 8:39pm
SF Sorrow:

This Grass Roots is their best!
An Anthem of the 60's!
  8:39pm
WLSClark:

Kip Brown collects them too.
Avatar 8:39pm
sw2442:

MOM WHIG...absolutely...I always say my parents were lucky to be around when all this great music originally came out.
WLSClark...3.98 for the mono...and 4.98 for the stereo...even more for the 4 or 8-track...and now Billboard costs about $8.99 or $9.99 an issue!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Mom Whig: Those cards are precious to me because they came from you!
Avatar 8:39pm
MOM WHIG:

SF I agree The Grass Roots is definitely the BEST!
Avatar 8:39pm
Eric R:

sw, it was shocking when LPs went to gasp $9.99!
Avatar 8:40pm
MOM WHIG:

Gaylord - you heard us talking - were your ears burning!!! But thanks
Avatar 8:40pm
SF Sorrow:

Hello Sir Gaylord!
Avatar 8:41pm
Eric R:

I think I bought 'The Beatles Second Album' in mono for $1.99 at a store called Korvette's. Stereo would have been $2.99 and now I know it was fake stereo so I made the right choice.
  8:41pm
David in California:

On the other hand, minimum wage in 1965 was $1.25, so a dollar was harder to come by.
Avatar 8:41pm
MOM WHIG:

David in CA - welcome here
  8:41pm
WLSClark:

Eric, as a 45 guy, what hit me was when I first paid 1.09 for a 45! "Free Ride" by Edgar Winter.
Avatar 8:42pm
Eric R:

that's the thing, David. I have a pay stub from 1976. 71 1/2 hours, $114 net.
Avatar 8:42pm
MOM WHIG:

Eric we had Korvette's here too
  8:42pm
WLSClark:

david, it was $1.25 in 1973 when I first started in work force.
Avatar 8:43pm
MOM WHIG:

In 1967 I got $2.00/hr from State Farm Ins Company.
Avatar 8:43pm
Eric R:

on the other hand, 8 burgers for a buck! 5 cts for beatle cards!
  8:43pm
WLSClark:

Mom, those big cities had so many stores that could have sales for prices I never saw in Dodge City
Avatar 8:43pm
MOM WHIG:

Eric - GOOD TIMES!
  8:44pm
WLSClark:

We are SOOOO lucky we grew up when we did--even with riots and war. The music pulled us thru,
  8:45pm
David in California:

Thank you, Mom Whig.
You and Eric and Clark know what I mean.
Avatar 8:45pm
MOM WHIG:

WLS and the MUSIC continues for us all here the 60's rule!
Avatar 8:46pm
SF Sorrow:

Did you have to "Get out of Dodge" WLS? or are you still there?
  8:47pm
WLSClark:

Mom, that was what was cool about working with Bob Irwin starting in 1990 and Sundazed. It was like returning to childhood while working a daily grind job.
Avatar 8:47pm
sw2442:

Eric R....I know...and new vinyl, which is usually just overcompressed digital masters, cost anywhere from $20-40!!!...ridiculous...
David in California...hi...my Dad tells me about working for a buck twenty five an hour delivering chicken, but, he liked having a job...
WLSClark...I can remember buying 45's for $1.29...and cheaper for oldies and cut-outs...
MOM WHIG...absolutely...those were good times...
...and hi Gaylord...
  8:48pm
WLSClark:

SF, my school teacher my first year in Lincoln (1971 high school) asked me why I left Dodge, I said "The marshall gave me till noon to get out of town."
Avatar 8:49pm
SF Sorrow:

Nice!!!
Avatar 8:49pm
MOM WHIG:

OP thanks for letting us into you show today - always amazing selections!
  8:49pm
WLSClark:

sw, even the new CDs are brickwalled badly. The 1980's ones are actually BETTER at times, altho many were vinyl transfers too.
Avatar 8:49pm
SF Sorrow:

Did you shoot up the town before you left?
Avatar 8:49pm
MOM WHIG:

See you all for BPN next
  8:50pm
WLSClark:

Great music to chat by. Over to BPN!
  8:51pm
David in California:

Hi sw2442. I get what you're saying. I'm just concerned that sometimes discussions of the past lack context.
Avatar 8:51pm
MOM WHIG:

See you soon David in CA
Avatar 8:51pm
sw2442:

Thanks for a great "today" show...today Orange Peel...see everyone next week I hope...
  8:53pm
uptown jen:

Thanks for “today” and “tomorrow,” Sir Peel.
Avatar 8:54pm
DA the DJ:

Thanks everyone!
Avatar 8:56pm
