Hey, Denny! Ed Ames was somewhat of a star in his own right. He had a few hit singles. I think the Ames Brothers were Native American by ethnicity.

hello and welcome Andrew in Toronto, Listener Baby, DA The DJ (TAST), Reechie, LesleyK, Gerry from Miami myron feld and Woo! everything is A-OK!
  2:16pm
Gerry from Miami:

@Woo. Yes, that was one of his solo hits. Remember him on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show throwing tomahawks at Johnny who was standing in front of a round wooden target with his arms and legs spread apart. One of Ed's tosses landed mere inches from Johnny's family jewels. Hilarity ensued.

Needles and Pins = The Night Never Ends? No wonder I failed French.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Dennis Diken:

@myron - I wonder if Pet Clark incorporated "The Night Never Ends-AH" in French?
  2:24pm
Gerry from Miami:

@myron feld. I am sure the composer(Jackie DeShannon) had nothing to do with that translation into French. Hope she still got her royalties, though.
  2:30pm
Gerry from Miami:

Dennis, Pet Clark was almost as big a star in France as she was in England. She and her hubby, arranger Tony Hatch, probably had a full-time translator on hand to translate these tunes into French, paying no attention to the original sentiment of the songs, just retaining the melody and meter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Dennis Diken:

@Gerry from Miami - indeed! Tony Hatch is a big hero, to be sure. I think Michael Shelley did an interview with him a few years back. re: translations of English pop lyrics - I bet we can make a study of such tunes whose meaning differs from their counterparts.

Sometines, it was pretty literal. Like the Beatles' "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand" or "Sie Liebs Dich." JA JA JA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm

@Gerry from Miami: "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand" means "come give me your hand," I believe

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Hoboken Jack:

Hi Andrew!
  2:50pm
Gerry from Miami:

Just thought of something, Dennis. Perhaps the least understood of all US Number One hits was Kyu Sakamoto's smash, "Sukiyaki." The lyrics to that song certainly had nothing to do wih Japanese cuisine! No DJs I ever heard play it even made a stab at the real meaning of the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
Dennis Diken:

@Gerry from Miami, here's what I found online re the meaning of "Sukiyaki": The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears won't fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings. The English-language lyrics of the version recorded by A Taste of Honey are not a translation of the original Japanese lyrics but a completely different set of lyrics set to the same basic melody.

The title Sukiyaki, a Japanese hot pot dish, has nothing to do with the lyrics or the meaning of the song; the word served the purpose only because it was short, catchy, recognizably Japanese, and more familiar to most English speakers. A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew."
  3:03pm
Gerry from Miami:

Thanks, Denny, for your research. I had forgotten about A Taste of Honey's take on "Sukiyaki." And poor Mr. Sakamoto. He was aboard the jet plane that crashed into a Japanese mountainside back in the 80s, killing all aboard.

Off topic but....Dennis, I remember you playing a great up-tempo doo wop song a while ago, but I couldn't remember the song name, only that the group was the Du something or others. So I scrolled back through my WFMU gold-star favorites and found it: The Du Mauriers doing "All Night Long" -- a couple of clicks later, I now own it (digitally). Thanks again, DD!
