True dat, TDK 60. I got a new turntable in March of 2020, which filled out my home studio. No 16 RPM (yes, mostly for spoken word) or 78RPM. A friend just gave me an older turntable in working order with 78 RPM, which I have to find room to hook up.

I've been collecting some older turntables, but nothing is working 100%. I wanted an old-school set-up in my office and never planned on collecting, but, like I said, nothing working 100% so I keep on looking. Can't exactly try things out in the thrift store

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am

Phillippe, I bought a relatively recent make of a portable turntable. I plugged it in and it worked. Got it home and realized the output was only through the headphones. But I got my $20 worth.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
Irene Trudel:

Jon, for many years I had a Technics automatic that I rescued from the trash. It still works, but better grab the tonearm before it gets to the lead-out groove. It will drag across the record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am

Irene Trudel:

Welcome Rey and WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am
Phillippe:

I thought I hit the mother lode when I found a 90's Bang and Olufsen in what looked to be pristine condition. Got it home and found it needed a new needle, which runs $250-$400. So the hunt continues. Damn gorgeous piece of art though. I have a couple Technics needing a little work as well -- a PL 512 and a close-and-play
  9:29am
Doug from Maine:

Greetings, Andrew in Toronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am
Irene Trudel:

My older Technics only had a 45 spindle for the record changer. Took me years to find a replacement (plastic, not metal). Parts are hard to come by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am
Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
Phillippe:

I like the close and play (I think they referred to it as linear tracking) for records with a bit of warp (though it's not great for the record lifespan), but I get a loud buzz out of it -- and forget about playing that last song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am
Irene Trudel:

Close and play = no good for the records, IMO!

TDK60:

Was out for minutes on a chore. I discovered there used to be party LPs on 16 RPM. Usually live sets, longer than most 33.3 LPs' time. Low fidelity. Trini Lopez did one or more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am
Phillippe:

@Irene that sounds like a pretty good deal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am
listener Rey:

For decades I got by with a gently-used Technics SL-BD20 that my brother fished out of the garbage for me. A couple years ago i bought myself an AT 120LP with the USB connection to facilitate digitizing about 2000 LPs. Thanks to pandemic and staying home, I'm about halfway done.

Holy crap, Eddie Hazel in the house!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Phillippe:

@βrian we spent two years fixing our basement water issues -- we have a high water table and the house is directly built on sand, and the previous owner had only put concrete on 3/4s of the basement. Added the concrete, patched cracks, added drains to run water away from the house, ran a dehumidifier so long that the sump pump is ready to give out already. It finally stopped smelling like a cave and was dry enough to paint. Then we had a handyman dude over to make some repairs to the steps. Same previous owner (actually the original owner as well -- he built the house all by himself in 1955 using scavenged objects and no real knowledge/common sense) used cinder blocks for the steps, but he placed them with the open sides up and filled them with dirt. We hired the guy to seal up the dirt holes. Unfortunately there was a language barrier and he went ahead and sealed up the drain in the stairwell and added a layer of concrete so the well became level with the threshold. We called him back to remove it, but had a huge storm before he got here, the water had no place to go, so we are back to square 1
