abbazzabba: Yeah, bastardization is a word. Where you at in the South? I'm in New Orleans, like Brian.

The thing about MTV in the early days is that it had such an eclectic mix of music, so as a 13-y-o when it came out, I heard lots of bands I might not have heard otherwise, at least not at that time, particularly British postpunk bands. But in the same hour you could see ZZ Top, Madness, Michael Jackson, Judas Priest, the Go-Go's, Herbie Hancock, Ultravox, etc, in no particular order. No way that would happen today when playlists are so tightly controlled by market research and algorithms.

In Los Angeles there was a precursor to MTV on the local ABC affiliate. It was a late night Friday affair that was short lived. I remember it to be a jumble of odds and ends. One that I still remember, featured The Meat Puppets mowing the lawn.
