Tonight: Sports and tech, and a few movie picks, with Mark's friend Paul in Miami

Links:

Will Oremus links to a baseball video clip: "this is a beautiful visual metaphor for the perils of automation, right down to the body language of the batter who can't believe he struck out because of a dumb robot umpire and the human umpire who's like 'hey i just work here, take it up with the algorithm'"

-> A relevant comment on that post: "'Bill is getting the signal from above.' I love how discourse around black boxes (or systems that appear as black boxes to most of us) often require faith and have quasi-religious overtones. In this case, the algorithmic decision coming from ABOVE."

• Paul in Miami writes, in response to the clip above: "A couple years ago a pitcher lost a perfect game on a horrible, indefensible call at 1st that should have been the 27th out. ... there was nothing that could be done. The crew didn’t overrule the call since the umpire at 1st was closest and made the call. Heartbreaking. But human. There is purity in error at times." Paul points us to this video (on toxic YouTube, sorry): "Call costs Tigers perfect game vs. Tribe"

• On private equity offshoring baseball-related jobs to China, from a Boondoggle newsletter by Pat Garofalo: "Miken Sports, a manufacturer of baseball equipment, recently announced plans to close a facility in Caledonia, Minnesota, and move its production to China. The company is jointly owned by Major League Baseball and a private equity firm, Seidler Equity Partners, where the owner of the San Diego Padres is a leading executive." And then this (emphasis mine): "While you may love your favorite sport, your favorite sport doesn’t love you back."

• Here's the book (not movie) version of Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline

• My own recently viewed movie picks, all on Netflix: The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Bo Burnham Inside, and Wish Dragon.

What we Value is most often not expressed explicitly. Make your values explicit. Horse racing for instance- was and is a way for artsitrcacy to show off their wealth like a divine right. 1850’s horse racing in Virginia for instance…or Saratoga today? What do horse racers value?
