Israeli Singer and Actor Liraz Finds Her Iranian Roots in Hollywood

Israel’s Liraz was inspired to musically explore her Iranian-Jewish roots in an unlikely place - Hollywood. While acting in films with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sean Penn, she discovered LA's huge Iranian community. (She's currently featured in the television series Tehran.) Soon she was singing in Farsi, and on her latest album Zan (Glitterbeat), collaborating with Iranian musicians.

Liraz joins us ahead of gigs at the Barbès in the Woods Festival Saturday August 21st and outdoors at Lincoln Center Tuesday evening August 24th.

Hi chresti! The dvd Franco sent arrived today, really interesting video on the Lower Haight, where I used to live. Question though: should I be worried that he now knows my home address?

A big, villainous twirly 'stache?

ShelbyG: It's a tour of the LH by a guy who'd owned a few buildings there in the 70s, gives a history of the area by talking about the various businesses. I haven't had a chance to watch much because I want to give it my undivided attention later, but the Runza connection would be that building on Haight and Fillmore that was known briefly as Little Omaha.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm
chresti:

I wouldn't worry, mariano, you're at a safe distance.

@mariano: kinda why I asked — that was the area Little Omaha was, right?

I think we’re about to have a thunderstorm ⛈
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm

Chresti, I confess I'm not sure - daf is a frame drum, darabuka is a goblet drum - those are possible. The credits on the LP don't list the individual percussion instruments.

has me thinking of "No Land's Song" too -- not sure how it might be available now? (i saw it through the Human Rights Watch Film Festival some years ago) but also worth watching, taking the stage is indeed a political act:
