Also very appreciative of the time we talked about The Phil Silvers Show. I did get around to watching some episodes. I started routinely recording the Decades block overnight with Phil Silvers and Car 54, Dobie Gillis too and sometimes Our Miss Brooks. The Phil Silvers Show has quickly become one of my favorites, and both of the Nat Hiken-directed shows have such flashes of brilliance in them.

On the train, I watched one Phil Silvers episode I couldn't stop thinking about, the one where he convinces the guy behind Around the World in 80 Days to do a contest for the first person to go around the world in 80 hours. The Army gets wind of the challenge and makes sure nobody can take advantage of the military, so Bilko and company decide to slap a Priority Express Baggage (P.E.B.) tag on Bilko because anything with that tag is treated as "grant it, fly it, don't ask any questions."

The Car 54 episode that parodied the destruction of the East Tremont section in the Bronx for the Cross-Bronx Expressway was brilliant too. Featured Molly Picon, the Jewish Yenta, who refused to give up her apartment to make way for a new interchange for the George Washington Bridge. Said something like why should I give up my dwelling so some schmuck from New Jersey with Bermuda shorts can get home five minutes faster. So darn prescient.

And I've loved some of the Jewish humor that pops up in those Nat Hiken shows too. There was a Bar Mitzvah episode of Car 54 that I really enjoyed, and some of the references, and even the music at the very end being in a minor key, indicated to me that the episode was definitely written by Jewish writers. The episode with Molly Picon that I just mentioned is another example because the East Tremont neighborhood was primarily Jewish. I definitely recall seeing some other really good references but can't remember the specifics. Also, I love it so much that Phil Silvers and Nat Hiken refused to work with all-white ensembles. That's so amazing and makes me so proud of them.

I really should read more about the history of NYC, especially because it's all interesting to me in general. But my grandpa grew up in the shadows of Yankee Stadium. Heard plenty of stories about how glamorous Grand Concourse was, how many weddings and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs happened there. That highway is a tragedy. It tore up neighborhoods, causes a ton of pollution, and for what? The most inefficient mode of transportation possible? Tragic. Of course there's a very sordid history of major highways, especially interstates, completely destroying neighborhoods where marginalized communities lived, like Black communities. Enormous amounts of land and wealth, just gone or cut off by a freeway.
