I've been playing more guitar lately; I think I'm actually starting to get it working. I think it was when the dog knocked my el-00 over and snapped the mahogany headstock right off. It made me stubborn about it, so I got another abused little parlour guitar, adjusted the truss-rod myself, put some nice strings on it and....magic.

Nobody gave me a guitar, but I got my 1st in High School trading in 50 books of Plaid Stamps (has stations and some stores used to give them with purchased, you pasted them in a book and got a catalog, you could trade stamps for items). It had awful action, and, over time, the neck Bent into a "c" shape.

when my mother got the word that plaid stamps were being discontinued we all sat around the dining room sticking them into the books.
added it up.
we each got to choose whatever we wanted.
i don't remember my siblings' choices but i got a small electric organ -which i guess is another instrument i let go of. it never stopped working.
my mother chose a vacuum cleaner, a blender and...1 or 2 other things.
that vacuum cleaner and blender were with us for years.

Gina her truck was broken down on my driveway and i retrieved one of my towels from the back, and her guitar -the back 1/2 missing!
i didn't intend to steal it. i figured she'd come asking for it and we could talk for a minute - and maybe i'd get my clash and x-ray spex t-shirts...but she never did that.
i ran into her 7 years later and she apologised.

Giving away guitars seems pretty universal especially amongst musicians who don't have to worry paying the rent. One of the most endearing stories I've heard was when Albert Lee joined Eric Clapton's band. Albert used to have a Les Paul custom.. it was his first great guitar..by the time he joined Eric's band he no longer had it.. he was playing Tele's through Fender amps.. so he and Eric are talking about guitars during a break in rehearsals, and he mentioned his beloved black Les Paul custom. Clapton nodded his head, and said 'I think I have one of those around here somewhere.. At rehearsal the very next day, Eric came in carrying the same vintage Les Paul case. He gave the case to Albert here this is for you. Albert couldn't believe his eyes, it was exactly the same model Les Paul Custom he had owned..if I recall it was the same year as well! Someone should write a book about the tradition!!
