Hey everybody!! Great to hear Irene today for Dave!! I have the added pleasure of being able to drop in her, as I'm right down the hall from her home studio today!! Uh-YAY!!!
Avatar 2:02pm
Stork:

ah-ha ha - drop in ON her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey doctorjazz, Stork (down the hall) and all listening in today! Happy to fill in for Dave today while he's summering somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Gina Bacon:

Hi Irene! Happy Saturday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Gina! Glad you have some time to check in before your show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
fred:

Good afternoon Irene and listeners, and that Stork character who doesn't seem to know how droppings work (avoid them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Irene Trudel:

Oh, and Nica says "Happy Caturday!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Irene Trudel:

Droppings indeed, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Gina Bacon:

So glad I can be here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm

Big Carla Bley fan, especially the big bands stuff. Got her bio (but haven't read it yet).

Hi, I!

Scraping/stripping paint/varnish/goo off an abused oak threshold, under the merciless solar furnace, suckin' fumes and rearranging my musical DNA....sounds glorious, Dave!

Good day Irene and listener type
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Doug and StringOFperils. But I'm not Dave. Dave's not here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Irene Trudel:

Hello duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
doctorjazz:

Just Googled, Big Band Theory didn't seem to get as well reviewed as other Bley albums.
Black Saint and the Sinner Lady was a bit of a different sound for Mingus, more orchestral, Spanish influenced (like Tiajuana Moodsbefore it, but looser). The 2 tracks nice together.
Avatar 2:21pm
Stork:

Just love love love this rekkid!!

Think Iyer just played, or is about to play live. Saw him once, looooong ago, need to catch him again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
doctorjazz:

Gotta go for a bit, check in later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, it's kind of a shame - Bley and friends were really great on this one as always. Vijay Iyer plays tonight at Prospect Park Bandshell, free with RSVP: www.bricartsmedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
doctorjazz:

Knew I saw him listed, will miss this one, but try to see him soon.

Hi, Irene!
🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
WR:

Was Wyatt playing trumpet on that track. I read that Wyatt learned trumpet because he felt he had no one else that would bring what Mongezi Feza did to his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
StringOFperils:

Appy polly loggies, O my Sister! Sorry for calling you Dave, Irene!!! My brain pan is sun-baked.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
WR:

That's ok SOp, you gave Irene the opening to reply, "Dave's not here".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
fred:

I once got a job offer in Morristown. I didn't know about WFMU at the time. Weird thing is I probably would never have heard about the station had I taken that job
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Sunny! This is not my regular slot. Just filling in for Dave today. And 'hi" to you, WR and Summer and Michael and Sylvia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm
Irene Trudel:

SOp, I'm somewhat baking in our less-than-nicely-cooled apartment. fred, my family used to live in Morristown, NJ. Really pretty out that way and there was lots of farmland at the edges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm

good afternoon Irene and all

Well, it took me 20 minutes to get my socks and boots on (My "baggy" jeans were like yoga tights, the inflamation is so bad, but I'm ready to go to the doctor (staph infection + psyroisis). Only will cost me $50.
Avatar 3:16pm
northguineahills:

Hard to get an appointment, as this county is in Code Black (higher then red), but one opened up for me today).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
doctorjazz:

Morristown is nice, a cousin lives there (nice performance space there, saw Fountains of Wayne there on their last tour). Live about 45 minutes from there.
Avatar 3:23pm
northguineahills:

Only been to Morristown for work at the town council.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
doctorjazz:

It's all burbs, Morristown a bi bit more urban than my area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey coelacanth∅ and northguineahills! I'm falling behind in my comments, dealing with some computer hiccups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Irene Trudel:

ngh, I'm glad you're going to the doctor and having that taken care of! Hope it heals quickly after this visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
fred:

I didn't take the job because it was a misunderstanding (my first and only attempt at user interface was a huge success, but a fluke) and I just hate driving, so Morristown wouldn't have worked for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Irene Trudel:

Yeah, Northern NJ is really car-centric. Morristown has a regular train into town and buses but they're not especially convenient. But I wouldn't exactly call it an urban area, doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i've seen a few shows in morristown -Robert Hunter, Iris Dement ...(others?)
spent lots of time nearby in the beautiful rural areas, and the great swamp.
lots of field recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
prguitar:

Hi Irene, Just tuning in.. Hope you and Peter are doing well. Thanks for playing dear Pat!! You've made my day!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
doctorjazz:

I agree, Irene, it's definitely not urban, that was just relative to my town (Westfield, where I live, has an even smaller downtown). But it ain't the big city...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
fred:

I just love Brigitte Fontaine (and I usually hate French music)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey prguitar! Glad you were here to hear Pat, and we are doing well. coelacanth∅, Morristown has that lovely Community Theater, which after years of resistance was turned into a very nice venue. When I was in my 20s, an attempt was made to put on shows there but lotas of locals didn't want it turning into a rock venue, so the deal fell apart. It was almost turned into condos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Irene Trudel:

And the Great Swamp! I've whiled away a lot of time through there. So lovely and peaceful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
doctorjazz:

Moved to Joisey from Brooklyn 25 years ago, still feel like a transplanted New Yorker.
MPAC inn Morristown has restarted concerts.

Never seen Iris DeMent, on the must see list.

Love this In Movement...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, we saw an extraordinary show with that trio at Central Park Summerstage a few years ago. Beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
coelacanth∅:

does westfield still have real traffic cops on broad st? and do they still give occasional acknowledgement to especially considerate drivers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Gina Bacon:

I love hearing that doggie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
coelacanth∅:

i do too^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Gina Bacon:

Hi coelacanthø!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
doctorjazz:

Coel, sometimes when there's lots of activity there are traffic cops there, mostly not.
They do have some live outdoor music during the summer on Tuesday nights, but mostly local musicians not known to me. (Don Braden is a regular at the festival, he's the only one I have a CD of). One year Ronald Shannon Jackson was there with a trio, being completely ignored. He was surprised I knew who he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
Gina Bacon:

Slowly and cautiously! Thanks, Irene...I hope you can get back to it someday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

The Sounds of Stork! Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm

Did Bronwyn recover from there being a Sparks musical?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
I k e:

Just tuned in, good to hear Stork hanging out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
doctorjazz:

Love this tune, quite a band...
Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, and Larry Ridley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
doctorjazz:

(Especially cool, as the title track was Lee in Soul-Jazz groove)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Irene Trudel:

fred, I highly recommend that Sparks musical, Annette. Peter and i saw it last week. Amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Gina Bacon:

This is so nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
doctorjazz:

Oh, I'm a day late, but Happy Trump Reinstatement Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
I k e:

Yikes, I've seen enough jokes about that on Twitter already today to last a lifetime. Even Preet Bharara sent out one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Irene Trudel:

And now the mood is ruined! I try not to think about that name. Although the reinstatement prediction from the My Pillow guy reminded me of when Harold Camping kept predicting the date of the rapture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
I k e:

Ah, Harold Camping! Isn't his radio operation the one that sold off its AM radio station a few months ago because the land its transmitter was on, in Maspeth, Queens, was worth far more than the actual AM station itself, and now they have nowhere to put their AM transmitter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
fred:

The last movie I saw in a theater was Inland Empire. I'm more of a live stuff fan, especially contemporary dance (I try to see about 50 shows a year). I almost never watch movies online. One exception was Paradise View, because Okinawa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
I k e:

(Ugh, to be pedantic, that second sentence above should read "sold off its AM transmitter site", not "its AM radio station", but you probably knew what I meant.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Irene Trudel:

I k e, that sounds about right. I think he also had something to do with the Christian radio station across the parking lot from WFMU. They kept complaining that our signal was bleeding into their (improperly grounded) equipment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
fred:

@Ike: I've never seen you as a pedant, any more than a Felder Fan

Haven't seen Gina in a while - hope she's doing well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm

Almost the end, thanks, Irene (sorry if I dampened the mood...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm

Thank you so much, Irene. It was so nice to have you as my Saturday soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm

@doctorjazz: nah, you always light up a room, don't play that card. I listened to Amirtha Kidambi and Lea Bertucci again on my way to a hospital appointment yesterday, many thanks again to your daughter for that rec
