Yum. Never connected the pain relief before but all that capsaicin and Scovilles gotta be good for something more than taste.

As to 'spicy' foods, especially those involving capsaicin (the active ingredient in hot peppers): they're good for you in a whole bunch of ways, 'may' stimulate the immune system, 'may' increase life expectancy, etc - see www.pennmedicine.org... and swirled.com...

Note I say 'may' because it's difficult to prove these things conclusively and the science is in its infancy. But it's one of those things where you can literally 'trust your gut' - if something makes you feel good -and- has no nasty side effects, then it probably is legitimately doing right by your insides somehow. Of course if you're using rancid / shitty ingredients, which is quite common with bottled hot sauces - or you're just burying the tatste of shitty food - that will probably negate the positive aspects. (Which explains Franco's experience coming home from that restaurant, the other day).

Also in this category (and which helps with pain relief) is a couple of hours in a nice, legit, nordic-style sauna (or hot spring, if you have access to such). One of the big lacks of the U.S. public culture is that it's basically too infantile to permit such a thing (at scale). I just hope we don't lose the Russian and Turkish baths ...

As, Scott mentioned earlier, I used to grow my own ghost peppers and carolina reapers. It does have pain relief properties (stay away from hot sauces w/ sugars and preservatives), It also gives you an endorphin high. Once you acclimate yourself to the heat, you can tastes the various flavors of each chili. I took a while until I realized ghost peppers have a citrus flavor and reapers have a more "meatier" pepper. (and everything headcleaner said above.).

@headcleaner: I used to have friends that turned one of their bathrooms into a sauna. They ran a techno label and had parties at their apt. Afterwards, we'd chill in the sauna before going home.

Nuclear-grade hotness alone doesn't do it - you need lots of fresh stuff in your curry (especially ginger and/or galanga, fresh curry and/or kaffir lime, freshly ground spices... and fresh everything else) to get that "lift"

@headcleaner: I started w/ Tobasco at age 6, and slowly worked up my tolerance. By age 12, in Thailand, I was eating Thai Chilies. By 15, Jalapenos, by, 22, habaneros. I couldn't eat ghost peppers until my late 30s, and reapers in my early 40s. (But yes, when I have a kitchen, I make bitchin' curries from all cultures).
