It is indeed a Trabant - captured here in the wild.

βrian: A friend of mine just suggested making tomato paste (using the oven, in a pan), have you ever tried that?
Avatar 🚂 12:05pm

I've got a bunch of tomatoes too but closer to 17 pounds than 117 ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm

Greetings ßrian, Michael, Chresti!

We haven't. It sounds good, but we really focus on quantity and speed. And we prefer eating tomatoes because they're juicier.

Hey threemoons, I saw on the other board that your mom is having some challenges with getting around and getting her treatments -- I hope things settle down and she can get everything taken care of when it needs to happen.

Nice Trabent that's not tres bent!

Chresti: True, not as many on the roads here as a decade or two back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm

the Trabant looks like it would make a great little autocross car. That is, if it could make it all the way through the course

1.1L engine - and it's even a 4-stroke, unlike earlier Trabants! This model is the final Trabant, produced 1990-1991 (if I have my facts right)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
David Dichelle:

Yes, some people "tweak" their old Trabis and turn them into monster cars of some sort. Not the case in the picture, of course.

Hey Phillippe! Just saw your comment on Trouble's board. Glad things have calmed there. The footage looked insane, and West St. looks wrecked. Nothing to report here, except I am leaving work early today to go see Mdou Moctar in Asheville tonight!

Basic idea: Take all of your ingredients. Dump in large ovenproof pot. Set oven to 275 and leave lid OFF and just let it bake for hours and hours. When it's all done go at it with an immersion blender. Wonderful. You really don't even need a recipe.

My random choice program came up with "New Zealand", so that's my guess for today (we can hear The Clean, The Bats, etc...)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Threemoons:

@Yeti Bob The last time I did it I used my 16 qt enameled stockpot and many many CSA Romas that had some heat burst. Also put in lots of yellow and white onions, sweet peppers, LOTS of garlic and a lot of fresh basil and oregano. Use a huge glug of olive oil also. Before you blend with immersion blender just take herb stems out; easy peasy. Don't forget lots of salt and pepper also as well as a pinch of sugar if need be....tailor to your tastes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm

@Michael the long slow oven roasting caramelizes everything a teeny bit. Again, leave the lid off...everything gets concentrated. I should make some eventually again.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm

Marie: That is a typical Trabant, color and all. Most cars here in Eastern Germany used to be Trabants, now they are relatively few and far between, but not entirely gone, 30 years later.
Avatar 🚂 12:55pm
YETI BOB:

☾☾☾: I'll report back once I've tried this. Thanks!

WARNING RE oven roasting tomato sauce: Make sure that any hardware on your pots is oven-safe! ie Farberware only goes up to 300 IIRC and Le Creuset is 350 IIRC. I retrofitted ALL of my enamelware with metal knobs and it's all good to go.

Hey David, interesting about the car. That reminded me of a novel I read a few years ago set in Berlin on on the summer solstice, just after the reunification and I think mostly in East Berlin about a writer researching an article on potatoes--it's really good. It's called Midsummer Night by Uwe Timm. It was translated into English from German, I think. I highly recommend it.
