Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from September 3, 2021 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

We get robocalls from the Township of Fairfield at my job because we used to have our offices there. Well, they called to say the good news is that the Passaic River will not be cresting at 23 feet this afternoon as predicted. The bad news is that the river will be cresting at 22 feet instead. Flood stage is at 19 point something. Yikes! We used to get about 2 feet of standing water in our plant after Nor'easters and hurricanes. This has to be devastating especially since the Passaic flooded just over two weeks ago after heavy rains.

And yeah, trying to hold Existential Dread at bay as much as possible. On top of this whole Pandemic/American ChristoFascist thing, Mom got a Stage IV cancer diagnosis a few months ago and I'm the only one around nearby...ready to lose my freaking mind. I know things could always be worse, but to quote my friend aka Needleman's Axiom: "Two things have always been true: 1) Things could always be worse. 2) Never, in the course of human history, has that ever actually comforted anyone."

Thank you all, wonderful @WFMU family. I have been spending every weekend possible with Mom. Even though it means me getting home WAY too late Monday night, I am having Rosh Hashana dinner with her and doing a family Zoom call with my brother in Australia. @headcleaner yeah, I hear you. My Dad passed VERY suddenly a few years ago over Thanksgiving weekend at my Stepmom's. In a way it was easier to handle on so many levels--Stepmom handled all particulars and my Dad wasn't sick a day in his life before that really. This is much more hands on, much more drawn out, and much scarier and sadder.

And thank you @Bryce and all. WFMU at work is like the elevator cable that pulls me through my workday. 3moons - nothing prepares us for watching someone close to us go through a long, drawn-out exit. But you're there with her, through it all - which is one of the important and valuable things we can be part of in this life. @Headcleaner truth. But the USA's toxic capitalism with zero safety net makes it all so much harder. If I was doing this same job almost anywhere in the EU I'd be able to safely take a few months off of family leave to be there with her full time.

Let me add that I hope everyone made it through the local flooding in the Tri-State OK. We got almost 5' of water in my building's basement, but due to the way the thing is built out, my storage unit was miraculously spared - my lifetime supply of Costco paper goods and Cafe Bustello (ordered when COVID began; priorities) is safe for now. OTOH my poor building super spent a solid 24 hours getting the basement and his own apartment cleaned up, and getting the water out and back into the central drain systems...

@Michael ### My Mom spent part of her early childhood living on the same block as a coffee roasting operation for Bustello (Dominican Bronx); she remembers when the windows were open in the summer how the smell of coffee wafted through the entire apartment....I always found the cans cheerful and the coffee good (although oddly enough my Grandma's go to brand was Old Gold, but maybe because back then it was one of the few brands that came in huge 5lb cans).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Michael 98145:

I remember those ... Folgers, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Threemoons:

@Michael ### Yup, one of my earliest memories of shopping with Grandma was her taking down the HUGE cans. This was before the peel off foil tops. I remember her checking to see if the replaceable plastic top was intact before putting the can in the cart. When we got home, I remember her having Grandpa use his strength to wrangle a manual can opener into the can, and telling me not to touch the dangerous looking disc of aluminum, and the smell of fresh coffee. I still love opening a fresh can of coffee but not using a can opener kind of takes away from it in my opnion....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Threemoons:

Something about the pop and hiss when you get a can opener into a can of coffee with that first cut...peeling back a foil tab just doesn't do it the same way.
