Zinn The Mood:
This set of miner songs is chilling. Had just watched last week Harlan County USA. Film has stayed with me ever since. Having read about various miner and rail strikes it was a very vivid reminder of how many lives are ruined by the greed of vicious and venal capitalists who all too often wouldn’t budge on even the basic decency of pensions, workers comp and a living wage. Most of these guys lived in or near poverty, yet did the most excruciatingly difficult work.
Should be required in every school to know what happened to their unions. With the state and the corporation joining together to literally kill workers who could no longer take being pushed to the edge with constant forced deprivation.
But so few really know the true history of the miners’ struggle, or in a larger sense how so many workers unions were brutally, violently crushed.
