A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Oh yes, I listen to WKCR a lot. Mostly jazz. They also have classical, and block shows on weekends-- blues, country, folk. Their "afternoon new music" show plays stuff like on WFMU. Schaap was a force, a radio teacher really.

Trouble I'd like to underscore your point about Schaap's enormous influence on WKCR. I was always impressed with the station, seeing it a bit from the inside back when I was a student there. My friends had shows, I got to be on the air a few times, and I was impressed by how professional it all was. I recently read an unusually great profile in the Columbia alumni magazine that goes into detail about how the station became what it is, in large part due to Schaap: www.college.columbia.edu...

Listener Gregory:

Should also mention that Phil Schaap was a very important record producer, winning Grammys for his reissues and multiple Grammys for his liner notes. He would discover new takes and errors of titles, personnel, or preferred takes that had been in the recordings for decades. If his obsessiveness was sometimes too much for the radio, it was spot-on for his productions.

Just as I suspected trouble, when you refer to the Ailanthus tree as a junk tree I was sure you were speaking of the sumac tree of which it's most commonly called. There's something like on the order of 10 or 12 different varieties of them and they all look practically indistinguishable from each other. And one in particular is poisonous of which I'm very allergic to. i got a bad case of it causing big blisters all over the back of my neck and upper back when I was 9 years old. And when it cleared up it left a scar in the shape of the number 9 as if it meant to leave a permanent reminder for me to remember when I had poison sumac at the age of 9. So I'm glad that the sumac trees / Ailanthus tree is the spotted lanternfly favorite food

Flyswatters are too slow for the lanternfly but the Bug-A-Salt destroys them every time and it's super fun

@Kpx, I think that sumacs are a native American plant. They look a lot like the ailanthus, which is an African invasive species, imported for its super-fast growth. Not sure if they are taxonomically related.

Listener Gregory:

Ailanthus and sumacs are in the same order but different families (according to Wikipedia taxonomic listings). I have no idea what that means. But they're not that closely related, even though they look quite similar (except for their fruit).

Soon the sumacs will be on fire, and we'll get that urge for going.

Ailanthus has stinky leaves. There's a pair of visible glands near the base of each leave that releases an unpleasant smell when disturbed.
