Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from September 10, 2021 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

A Friday evening when I'm not working is a rarity, so enjoying listening as we prepare dinner.

BB, I go to shows and concerts by myself all the time. I just pretend that you are sitting next to me, and I feel fine. Maybe you could try that.
By the way, you never laugh at my whispered comments on the shows!

And now, George Hearn attempts to convince his family to have a different kind of fun in NYC than the characters of the previous two songs were espousing

When I was very young, the most exciting thing I did in NYC was to eat at the Automat. You put money into slots to get a sandwich or piece of pie. It was incredible.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
diciassette:

That sounds like a terrific memory.
Avatar 7:49pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Wow I didn't realize that's what an Automat was! I was just listening to Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend today and wondering what an Automat was. I thought maybe it was a type of laundromat
Avatar 7:50pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

When I was little the most exciting thing to do was come up from rural PA with my parents to visit their best friends who lived on the UES. We would go to a restaurant called the Barking Dog for breakfast and I would get a "banana split" (made of yogurt instead of ice cream). I told my parents I would move to NYC someday, and guess who now lives a block and a half from the Barking Dog?

There are actually quite a number of New York-y Songs in "Demi-Dozen":

Automats are specifically mentioned in the Schmidt & jones penned Seasonal Sonata.

The Washington Square Hotel, right in the location described in Christopher Street, was where P.G. Wodehouse lived while he was writing musical comedies in the 30s (?). THAT was bohemian. Now it's filled with job candidates for NYU positions and European tourists.

I'm watching those Criterions too! They don't have Midnight Cowboy though, but still: super New Yorky!

According to discogs, it WAS Ellington on piano. I'll have to listen to that again. If only @doctorjazz were here, he would feel my pain in this matter.
