	6:17pm Jeff Moore: Um. It sounds less like the DNS records were deleted than that the underlying routing providing connections to the DNS (and other!) servers for Facebook went awry. Their DNS servers probably have all the necessary information in them ready to serve, but they got disconnected!

	6:17pm Rich in Washington: I had no internet all saturday and it made me clean, organize, sort, purge. It felt good.

	6:18pm Mike From Brooklyn: Large organizations have a network team or teams that manage their DNS records. Their work includes updating those records. We can speculate whether or not a planned update just went wrong (mistakes do actually happen and yes, there are coincidences) or if it was a hack or intentional outage.

	6:20pm Torbjørn: I wouldn't put all that much meaning on the DNS records being pulled. If they had some internal networking cascading error, typically from some config push, their internal BGP stuff might loose all routes to their backends. Wouldn't be surprised if their systems are such that if no route can found to the backend, DNS records are pulled automatically. Certainly stops the load balancers from having to answer the barrage of retry request.

I know it's evil, opaque, profits from contention & social discord - &tc. That is - I'd like to be a Reformist. But - it's pretty clear Reform & Incrementalism are impossible. Seems to me.
	6:26pm Mike From Brooklyn: To be clear, I'm not defending Facebook, or suggesting that they would not be capable of doing this intentionally, but I have seen major outages occur as a result of simple, honest mistakes, even if there are systems in place to avoid them. @Carolyn Pittis - you are not wrong about this outage helping Facebook highlight the benefits of their platform. I recall a few years ago when there was a global Blackberry outage (back when Blackberries were essential for business communication) and their stock price when up immediately after, as investors realized how essential they were.

Even though she came from Google and joined FB, she still did what no one else managed to do -- she got the evidence and then she got out and talked about it. Change happens by changing norms and continual nudges, and the cold turkey quit is only one method of combating the bad algorithms -- how about a campaign to encourage people to join mewe? so they can have alternatives.

• What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, & WhatsApp? by Brian Krebs, today, October 4: "Facebook and its sister properties Instagram and WhatsApp are suffering from ongoing, global outages. We don’t yet know why this happened, but the how is clear: Earlier this morning, something inside Facebook caused the company to revoke key digital records that tell computers and other Internet-enabled devices how to find these destinations online."

"... The outages come just hours after CBS’s 60 Minutes aired a much-anticipated interview with Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower who recently leaked a number of internal Facebook investigations showing the company knew its products were causing mass harm, and that it prioritized profits over taking bolder steps to curtail abuse on its platform — including disinformation and hate speech."

• Facebook and all of its apps go down simultaneously (Mike Isaac and Sheera Frenkel at the NYT, Oct 4, 2021): "Facebook has dispatched a small team to one of its California data centers to try and manually reset its servers in an attempt to fix the problem."

If they had some internal networking cascading error, typically from some config push, their internal BGP stuff might loose all routes to their backends. Wouldn't be surprised if their systems are such that if no route can found to the backend, DNS records are pulled automatically. Certainly stops the load balancers from having to answer the barrage of retry request.
