Good morning! I was less than a year out of college and living paycheck to paycheck. Tower Records had a sale on the Fantasy/Riverside/Prestige catalog. I had a stack of 3-4 Monk CDs including the Blackhawk date with Harold Land & Joe Gordon. And then I realized that the big Riverside box set was also on sale and even though I had Brilliant Corners and other CDs already it made more sense. So I did it, and I regretted it for a good couple years because I was broke and thought some of the sessions weren't up to the same level. But at a certain point I saw the light and stopped regretting the purchase.

apropos of nothing, there was a piece on Leo Smith in the Globe this week. It said he's got a 4 CD set coming in 2022 where each disc is duets with a different drummer. The drummers are: Andrew Cyrille, Jack DeJohnette, Pheeroan Aklaff and Hans Bennink. Sign me up for that one!

Baba, in 1971 a couple of friends and I went to a comic book convention at The Disneyland Hotel. We were all pretty stoned, but my friend Michael was really ripped on PCP. I saw a crowd standing around a small man smoking a cigar talking to a bunch of kids. I asked Michael who he was. Michael blinked and said "Oh, that's Jack Kirby" That's the only comic book convention I have ever been to.

Patron saint to a multitude of jazz musicians in the NYC area for many years, Pannonica de Koenigswarter provided safe haven for her favorite artists, first in her apartment at the Stanhope Hotel. Later at her house in Weehawken, New Jersey.

Over many years in the Weehawken house, Pannonica like to play a kind of parlor game with her musician friends. She would ask them, "If you were granted three wishes, to be instantly granted, what would they be?"

According to Pannonica, when she posed this question for the first time to her closest compatriot, Thelonious Monk, "he was pacing back and forth, and he paused for a moment to gaze out across the river at the New York skyline. Then he gave me his answers."

Here were Monk's answers:

"To be successful musically"

"To have a happy family"

"To have a crazy friend like you!"

"But Thelonious," Pannonica responded, "you have those already!" He just smiled and began pacing again.

-- Taken from "Three Wishes," a book of photos and remembrances from Pannonica de Koenigswarter, including the answers to her question from dozens of great musicians.
