Just recently I learned that Cavet started out as a standup comic. Very dry.

Just wanna note that just about everything I'm playing today was procured from The Heat Warps site that has been dropping electric Miles shows in chronological order for a couple years now.

Hey CoC! Great follow up to the Pere Ubu show last week. Freaky deaky!

Gerry from Miami:

Boy, did the old jazz hard-liners hate this stuff! The new nomenclature scared them-----jazz-rock, fusion, prog, acid jazz. I had a copy of "Bitches Brew" while in Vietnam in '70-'71.. Most of my fellow soldiers didn't care for it all that much. They were mostly into Creedence, the Who, Led Zep, Santana, Chicago, Hendrix, Moodies, Stones, the Dead, the Airplane, CSN&Y, the Woodstock album. You get the picture. Maybe it was the substances they were using. Elongated, all-instrumental pieces freaked them out, I guess. They DID like the cover art with the Nubian princess, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
tim from washington:

@RRN - You seem to be a Hendrix scholar, is there any truth to the Miles/Hendrix collaboration?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm

any birth of the cool you can play for dad's cousin? I know it's very different tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Barney Grubbs:

One of my earliest non-musical musical memories is going through my parents' collection (circa 1978) and being scandalized by an 8-track of Bitches Brew. I don't know if they ever listened to it after I was born in '72 (or ever), but the album cover certainly made an early impression.

Chuck:

Checking in from the Yay Area, nice set!

Gerry from Miami:

@zzz. And now, poor Keith can't play any kind of keyboard instrument. I think he can still use his left hand. His recording and performing days are probably over. So sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
tim from washington:

I wonder if my uncle was at this show. He was in A2 at the time and he was a Miles fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Alvy Singer:

In addition to all this touring, Davis had various groups in the studio throughout the first half of 1970 -- fourteen dates in the first half of the year!

That's a pretty impressive memory, Barney!

tim - Hendrix & Miles were pretty friendly - & reportedly jammed & everything. As I understand it - a session with Gil Evans was planned - but some say Miles wanted more money than was gonna happen. & then Hendrix passed. Of course Betty Davis was involved with Jimi, which Miles was not entirely thrilled about...

whoa just read this on the discogs page for a CD release of this blue coronet set:

"Later that same year : "Miles Davis was shot and wounded in the hip by unknown assailants in the early morning of October 9 as he sat in a parked car with a friend in New York's East Village. The injury was not serious, and Davis was treated at a hospital and released. The trumpeter, who was appearing at the Blue Coronet in Brooklyn, told police that he had been warned, four days prior to the assault, not to appear at the club, located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, unless he paid part of his salary to the unidentified man making the threats. Davis offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification and/or arrest of his assailants. He said he would never again play at the club." (Down Beat, November 13, 1969)"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

Good question, Alvy. I'm pretty sure Sinclair was in the pokey at the time. Iggy probably scammed a girl to pay for a ticket to the show and the Asheton Brothers were probably lurking outside until they decided it would be more fun to drink quarts of beer and chuck shit off the Washington Street bridge.
