The Jimmie Rogers museum in Meridian, MS, is a very nice and worthwhile stop on the way to New Orleans.

D Rok:

Ah, Jimmie Rodgers. The Elmo of his day. "T for Texas. T for Tennessee."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
D Rok:

But also kind of the Warren G of his day? His Gamblin' Barroom Blues isn't terribly unlike 'Regulate' where storytelling is concerned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Becky:

I'm not sure Elmo would have spelled out "T for Thelma" etc.!

Jimmie Rodgers block, thank you thank you!

A couple of these prob Camden, NJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

@kwatts "In The Jailhouse Now" definitely was Camden!

Becky, I almost never comment but I love your show every week. I always look forward to it. Thank you so much for all this great interesting music.

Loving the Jimmie Rodgers tunes, but the pedant in me wonders what's wrong with Blue Yodel No.7
  8:32pm
PJ:

When I was at the Armstrong House Museum in Queens (highly recommended!), the docent told me that he called himself "Lew-is", but his last wife called him "Lew-ee".

Gaylord Fields:

Ah, you did acknowledge and verify, even if you went agnostic on pronunciation of Louis' given name (which I believe he himself pronounced as "Lewis").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
ultradamno:

Cursed. Play it and a little girl comes out of a well in seven days and kills you
  8:34pm
PJ:

I also found out that people called him "Pops" because that was how he addressed people when he couldn't remember their name.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
D Rok:

Isn't it nice when Gaylord just pops in with useful information?

Hi Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
steveo:

there's a somewhat inconclusive section of Armstrong's wikipedia page about his name pronunciation en.wikipedia.org... (which cites two other sources)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Becky:

@Gaylord When I went to the Louis Armstrong House I too heard the same story as PJ! So was never sure.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
D Rok:

YES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Gaylord Fields:

@D Rok: Hi! My calling card says "Dirty Pedantry Done Dirt Cheap"!

@Becky: It's the same as how here among intimates you're known as "Becky" but professionally you go by "Beckettford."

BH:

it's possible I typed this before but this version of "In The Jailhouse Now" is a pretty good duet song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
steveo:

I'm gonna call him Lewis from now on :)
Loving the show tonight...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
D Rok:

Does anyone know what the reasoning is behind the changing lyrics of In The Jailhouse Now? Cash's version has significantly different lyrics than the J Rodgers version. The version on the Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack has entirely different lyrics still. It seems the lyrics of that song are rather fluid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Becky:

@D Rok - I think Jimmie Rodgers's songs, including T for Texas, almost immediately became "standards", which lent themselves to interpretation. They obviously were deeply influenced by Black jazz songs before him, so -- why not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Becky:

(*jazz and blues)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
D Rok:

@Becky: That's kind of what I had figured. Seems as good of an explanation as any.
  8:54pm
BH:

also if you're not doing yodeling, there's some extra room to get creative with the cover

To clarify, I was referring to the Willie Nelson/Webb Pierce "In the Jailhouse Now" from their 1982 album a few minutes ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Gaylord Fields:

Aaron Neville sure was a man who was born to yodel!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
D Rok:

@BH: That's true! If memory serves, in the Cash version, he just says "yodel boy," and then there's a guitar solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
