Gerry from Miami:

BOB, earlier after playing Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto," you said you had no idea why it was named so. Were you being serious? That piece and several others were commissioned to the Woody Herman band back in thr mid-40s, all showcasing Woody's clarinet----an instrument often made of ebony wood.

Gerry from Miami:

Sorry, Bob. Did a little research on the materials used to manufacture clarinets. At one time, a rubber compound known as EBONITE (often combined with grenadilla wood) was widely used to make the instruments. I suppose ebonite's black color is where the connection to ebony emerged.

Gerry from Miami:

BOB, to put a coda on my harangue about ebony wood, let it be known that this tree species is, and has been, threatened. Some countries have stiff legal penalties for its harvesting and use. Nonetheless, it would be nice if, in the future, you could find and play more of those Stravinsky pieces that he wrote for the Woody Herman band. Excellent blend of jazz and classical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
fred:

@Gerry: my workplace's address is 1 Stravinsky Place, which is redundant because said place was created to hold where I work, so there's no other number there, and never will be. All Stravinsky numbers are retired there
