Favoriting October 27, 2021: WATCHING FOR A SOUND: Celebrating the music and productions of Mitch Easter!. (Week four of our HELLRAISER FUNDRAISER!)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

40 years ago next month Let’s Active played their very first show. To mark the occasion I'm dedicating this entire show to the music and production/engineering/mixing work of the band’s now-legendary front man Mitch Easter, who helped create a new genre of Southern jangle-rock. I interviewed Mitch and asked a few of his peers, collaborators, and clients to share some thoughts and memories as well. Thank you for listening!

I think Mitch Easter is the first producer I ever knew about. Flash forward to 5 years ago, I'm back in my apartment for the first time in 3.5 months. Friends had removed my clutter so i could maneuver around in a wheelchair, and it was unnerving. But as I wheeled down the hall to my bedroom, I saw on the windowsill my copy of Easter's Dynamico CD. "I'm home," I realized.
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Hellraiser 2024 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm

That's so funny to me that early REM fans were snobs. Weren't they pretty accessible (ie not super obscure and easy to find their records) from the get go?

When this record came out I was mainly hard rock and metal fan, beginning to have grave reservations about the latter. I remember British metal magazine Kerrang had a picture of Robert Plant on the cover with a quote about the current metal scene, “I’d rather mow Mitch Easter’s lawn!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

So weird about the early snobbery. I just remember hearing "Radio Free Europe" on college radio and it just knocked me out. When the show announcement came out, I could hardly believe it. Most of my friends didn't care because, hey it wasn't Pink Floyd or <insert class rock band here>.

I can see how Leckie’s ideas about how Let’s Active should sound were a shock to the band. The sound is a far cry from the Dukes of Stratosphere and heavy into American AOR of the ‘80s.

Too young to have caught Let's Active live, so it was a dream come true to open for a Dynamico-era show and actually see him at work in person. He was even better live than I expected -- I guess I'd thought of him so much as a "studio guy"

Great show efd! Will have to check the rest out on the archives. I am extremely fortunate to have worked with Mitch in the last few years. Definitely a highlight of my musical life- being at Fidelitoriun and playing solos through a Sovtek pedal with him only a few feet away offering enthusiasm and encouragement. Thanks again!
