Whoof, your words made me instantly smell what I imagine a 1919 mechanical telephone switch and its associated wiring and musty dust smell like.
Which is kind of like what's going on in Those Cabinets.

Each switch completes a circuit by selecting one of 100 switching contacts. These contacts are contained on 10 semicircular disks, and each disk has 10 contacts. The 10 disks are arranged vertically. The movable part of the switch is a rod bearing a metallic brush. The rod moves both vertically and rotationally, thus selecting the appropriate contact as directed by the customer's dialing.
