Ursula1000:

Wikipedia says “Sophisti-pop is a subgenre of pop music. The term has been applied retrospectively to music that emerged during the mid-1980s in the UK which incorporated elements of new wave, jazz, soul, and pop. Music so classified often made extensive use of electronic keyboards, synthesizers and polished arrangements.” That’s about right. It’s a pretentious term and also one open to interpretation ala Balearic but I love it and think I have my idea on the topic. Get your issues of Smash Hits out and enjoy today's show!

Hey all! As a yoof, I loved Bowie, Roxy (both seemed pretty suave to me), and I had a Carmel single. So give it to me straight, doc: was i sophisticated?

Mr Fab:

And "Bela Lugosi's Dead" used a bossa-nova rhythm! So there. Sophist AF.
Avatar 12:09pm
Ursula1000:

Hey Fab! Yeah Roxy's Avalon ushered this vibe!

Bowie's Absolute Beginners flick was also all about this vibe.
Avatar 12:13pm
Mr Fab:

Wow, the '80s music video side of Andy is one that I'd forgotten. Didn't he do one for the Cars? Will have to relive that era of his career.

Common thread is the sophisticatedly-spaced serif typefaces, though sometimes playfully angled. Hi Ursula!

I did a mix 2 years ago of Japanese City Pop which is kinda like this---maybe a bit more Yacht Rock-y, 80s boogie sounding---it's my most played mix on my Mixcloud page!

Ah! I did have the first Thomas Dolby album. Otherwise, this was a side of the '80s i knew little about. At the time i was too busy blowing my brains out to the Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Birthday Party, and other blustery "b" bands.
Avatar 1:55pm
Ursula1000:

I somehow straddled that line of Big Black AND this! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Maulydaft:

I completely gave up pop music when I discovered The Clash in 1988 :D
