Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from December 3, 2021 Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Attack Of The Comps: Seattle Syndrome (etc.)
The title "Seattle Syndrome" refers to the predicament Seattle based bands found themselves in during the late seventies and early eighties, described by Neil Hubbard as the fact that "a Seattle band could produce stunning renditions of highly original tunes, to little or no support. You could do anything here, good or bad, and nobody would care."

That's interesting Kat @8:04, as this is the only piece of his that I'm really familiar with. Maybe it's the only piece of his that MOST people are familiar with, so they wanted to play his "deep cuts," not his "hit."

Ah, the metafrequeny is kicking in. This is very nitrous-sounding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm

I have Extended Voices on less-than-pristine vinyl :) and some recent Lucier recordings on digital. Haven't decided what to play of his on my Monday show - it's supposed to be a New Music Monday but I can't ignore his passing.

Kat, one definition of avant/experimental is "New Music," so there ya go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
ultradamno:

Some additional notes on The Urinals family tree I neglected last week that may or may not be of interest, after 100 Flowers drummer Kevin Barrett goes on to God & The State, Project 197 and Radwaste (as does bassist Talley-Jones) meanwhile Kjehl Johansen and Talley-Jones, who had both been in Danny & The Doorknobs would take a couple of other of those guys, join up with Vitus Mataré of The Last and formed Trotsky Icepick.

if you can find the version of OHM: The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music that has the accompanying DVD, you can watch Lucier controlling musical instruments with his brainwaves.

Mr Fab:

Since you missed Kitten, allow me to cut-n-paste my comment:

Listening to "I Am Sitting In A Room" again had me thinking about how amazing those early tape pieces were. Even tho we've had decades of sound collage since, and digital tools make it so much easier to make concrete-type stuff, those old cut-n-splice tape works like early S Reich, "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me," this one, are just so astonishing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Rich in Washington:

The first time I heard I Am Sitting In A Room, I was a teenager and it blew my mind. Now I actually one of the hosts of the very show I first heard it on after the founding host Richard Francis passed away in 2009.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

Very cool, Rich! I haven't known about Lucier for all that long, really. I might have heard him first on Fabio's show.

I thought the singer here was David Byrne for a sec
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Rich in Washington:

Weird. I could see that my interface was going into the red for no reason. Maybe pushing the volume is making it freak out? Could also be this old version of Mixxx DJ software I am using ATM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Rich in Washington:

Late 70s/early 80s, every major city had their David Byrne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
ultradamno:

Did he just sing "spray a robot with a can of mace"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember reading a interview with Glenn Branca and he pretty much accused David Byrne of ripping off another band that sounded exactly like Talking Heads before he even got into bands, from Rhode Island, where Byrne was in art school at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Rich in Washington:

OK now? I can sorta hear the stream in the other room. Is it still jumping around, level wise?

Was wondering if "White Power" was some kinda Skrewdriver-type thng. But the lyrics did seem to be ridiculing the concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Kat in Chicago:

I assumed the worst at first, then I wasn't sure. couldn't understand enough of the words
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Rich in Washington:

I looked it up. I was sorta curious but yeah, it was ridiculing the concept. Seattle had a large racist skinhead scene but more towards the mid-80s (as did Portland).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Kat in Chicago:

This didn't seem like the kind of comp you'd find that sort of thing on. Chicago had racist skins for sure (and anti-racist)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
ultradamno:

I hate Illinois nazis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Chicago and Boston and NY had huge skinhead scenes before Portland. My friend Erin did a fascinating podcast series on the white supremacist scene in 80s Portland. It's called It Did Happen Here. It's really worth listening to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
ultradamno:

There was a big outdoor show in Indianapolis that DOA and The Dicks headlined and a bunch of Chicago skins showed up at and they put aluminum can tabs between their fingers for the mosh pit. Nice kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Kat in Chicago:

yes, charming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Rich in Washington:

the skinhead thing got awful at punk shows towards the end of the 80s and early 90s. Most punk kids were easy prey and the police weren't sympathetic. I remember swarms of skinheads just showing up at shows and basically shutting them down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Rich in Washington:

I meant, the police weren't sympathetic to the punks. Kinda like today. I would imagine some of those skinheads later became Portland policemen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Kat in Chicago:

I was JUST wondering if any of the old Chicago skins became CPD
Avatar 10:00pm
Mr Fab:

Yikes. LA didn't have a nazi-punk problem. But we did the Suicidals. I liked Suicidal Tendencies as a band but I don't recall them ever attempting to distance themselves from those flaming assholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
Rich in Washington:

Maybe one of my last punk shows of that era, I went to see Tesco Vee and the rebooted Meat Men. And all these regular kids suddenly learned that punk clubs were a thing because of Courtney Love doing a photo-op at the Satyricon, Portland's oldest, grungiest punk club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm

The punks and the skins both used loads of heroin in Sydney and kind of blurred into each other anyhow.

Pauly from Clifton:

In NYC, Stormtroopers of Death attracted that Nazi skinhead crowd. I hated that Scott Ian and Billy Milano encouraged it as a big joke. What bullshit. I stopped going to see SOD and Anthrax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Rich in Washington:

and all these skinheads decided to converge on Satyricon that night because of the Meat Men but also there was a fight there the following week involving some club regulars.
So, all these skinheads plus all these regular bro type MTV watching boys who suddenly discovered punk clubs were a thing.
It was fucking epic. Just shit and glass and fancy sweaters flying everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

I like older Soundgarden

I also saw Soundgarden once, they cover Spinal Tap, it was the highlight of their set for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm

I went through this stage of liking thrash metal like Anthrax and Celtic Frost, etc. My roommate at the time was a huge metalhead and we'd trade all kinds of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
ultradamno:

Covered, that is. Voivod headlined and were awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm

Soundgarden is actually a pretty good band. Not into their later stuff but I like Kim Thayil's guitar playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm

ultradamno, saw Anthrax a couple of times and was unimpressed. They thought they were better than they actually were.

Pauly from Clifton:

ultradamno, agreed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm

I saw Cro-Mags open for Motorhead, who were opening for Megadeth. We left after Motorhead. I was deaf for two days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
ultradamno:

I was always pretty picky about thrash metal, but liked this German band called Deathrow who never really picked up much of a following here.
Avatar 10:15pm
Mr Fab:

I guessed i was amused enough by Soundgarden to ask to borrow one of their tapes from a friend and listened to it a couple times. Can't say i ever asked to borrow anyone's Nirvana albums. Who were not terrible, but I never felt the need to investigate them too deeply.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

I don't think I ever saw Cro-Mags, I did see Agnostic Front, who I thought were a joke.
Avatar 10:16pm
Mr Fab:

Husker Du were the band that had my ears still ringing the next day! Started bringing earplugs to shows after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Rich in Washington:

my favorite Nirvana story was the time we showed up at Satyricon to just blindly see who was playing and it was a couple of Seattle and Oly bands and one of them was Nirvana. We thought Seattle bands sucked at the time so we didn't go. Probably '89 or so?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
ultradamno:

I remember liking In Utero well enough but feeling it was like a sampler of hip influences of the moment, like a self-conscious demonstration they really weren't an MTV band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Husker Du were fucking loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
ultradamno:

Hmm, I don't remember them being that loud when I saw them. Maybe I got deafened early being up front.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Pauly from Clifton:

Mr Fab, your experience was like the first Motorhead show I saw with Brian Robertson. Loud. It's like I was wearing earmuffs for two days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember having immense hometown pride when Nirvana got big but then got really sick of them quick. Nevermind was fun but it seemed really overproduced to me. But must've listened to it a million times. One of the few things my then wife and I could listen to together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Kat in Chicago:

I wasn't that big a Nirvana fan, but I did own a copy of Bleach for a while. They played Metro a couple of times during the period I worked there, never saw them in a larger venue than that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Zipperhead7:

Cabaret Metro! First mosh pit I ever saw -- Fishbone at CM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Kat in Chicago:

Nice, Zipperhead! I suspect I was at that show. Yeah it was still "Cabaret Metro" then. I used to do their flyers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. Fishbone had wild shows from what I heard. I've unfortunately never seen them live.
Avatar 10:23pm
Mr Fab:

I did really like Nirvana's pre-fame "Sliver" single. Apart from the song, I like how on the pic sleeve, Cobain is standing in front of one of my fave spots at the time, Raji's. At the time Courtney was also in Hollywood, dancing the hoochie-coo at the fabulously-named nudie bar Jumbo's Clown Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Zipperhead7:

I think it was around '89. I lived in Iowa City and often attempted to set a land speed record to see shows at the Metro and get back home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Kat in Chicago:

LOL that sounds like a rejected name submission for what became Sheena's Jungle Room
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I know! I love that name!
Avatar 10:25pm
Mr Fab:

Aargh, Rich, Fishbone were FYRE! as the kids say. Saw 'em a bunch, tho the last time I caught 'em, too many members had left and they seemed to have lost a step.

Jumbo's Clown Room an all calliope stream. Make it happen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

I actually like Hole's first couple of singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Kat in Chicago:

We were undoubtedly at some of the same shows, Zipperhead. I worked full time there from '88-'92 and was around since '82
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
ultradamno:

I like Live Through This, as sick as I am of it now (Hole popping up on Yellowjackets was stomach turning), awful live around that time though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Rich in Washington:

No more volume freakouts?
I think I know what it might be. Let me know if it's happening again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Kat in Chicago:

It's been fine since the last flurry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

I'm also running my levels rather low, so after the show, be sure to turn down when I stop streaming because the stream's gonna be really loud, comparatively speaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
ultradamno:

I think we've talked about a couple of Metro shows we were both at, Butthole Surfers and Chris & Cosey, maybe you did the fliers I posted or something...

Volume doing well now

U-Men, saw them a couple of times. Good band, kind of annoying singer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

I saw Tad at Metro once and loved it

I can't remember if I saw Tad or not, I know I saw Ed Hall...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Kat in Chicago:

Oh I like this too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Rich in Washington:

There were bands that I saw opening for people that I didn't really watch - would go out back and drink and smoke etc, while waiting for the bands I wanted to come on. It's entirely possible I saw some now 'famous' bands but didn't know it.
Avatar 10:45pm
Mr Fab:

I also thought of Eno/Byrne. Which is a good thing because we really need "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts" to be its own genre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Kat in Chicago:

I was back hanging out at the bar for some of those bands, for sure. I saw Liz Phair play solo to like four people at Lounge Ax, can't remember who she was opening for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Kat in Chicago:

I was like "these are good songs" but overall impression was meh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

Some of these bands on the Syndrome comps sound a bit On-U Sound adjacent, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

I saw Sun City Girls and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 at Lounge Ax, that was great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

That must've been awesome, ultra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Rich in Washington:

Wow. I hope I can finish out this set. Where does the time go?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, I remember that club being a long, narrow space, like seeing a band in a shipping container.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Kat in Chicago:

That's accurate, ultra, it was a weird awkward space for shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Speaking of weirdly shaped spaces, Sparks is coming to my town early next year and playing at the wonderful but horrible sounding Crystal Ballroom.
Avatar 10:50pm
Mr Fab:

Future famous opening acts? I used to see Jane's Addiction on the bottom of bills, and a pre-Black Eyed Peas Fergie in a terrible band called Wild Orchid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Rich in Washington:

actually, Crystal Ballroom isn't horrible sounding but just not very good. It's acoustically a nightmare, being over 100 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Aitch:

Sparks have never toured Australia, will probably never get to see them, bummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Rich in Washington:

That's a shame, Aitch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Kat in Chicago:

They're playing Copernicus Center here, which should be wonderful and not horrible sounding. I paid considerably more for my ticket than I have ever paid to see a band but I figured it was important to see them while I can
Avatar 10:52pm
Mr Fab:

Lounge Ax actually sounds like it's laid out like CBGB, which was a long, narrow space, with the bar running along one side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
ultradamno:

It was like a running joke here about touring bands being made to open for Zero Boys, so I've seen a lot of iconic hardcore bands as opening acts. Die Kreuzen comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
ultradamno:

@Mr. Fab Yeah, the bar was like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

Die Kreuzen were super popular here back in the day. Very good band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
