Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm

But you can expect stuff like this from me in the near future, again. I've did some experimenting yesterday and immediately got the hang of it back.

I have spent almost a year as conscientious refuser in The Hague. I picked up some Haags dialect. As you can read.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Aha! I didn't know that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm

Wasn't the best time of my life.
Avatar 12:46pm

:-)
Dank u Jan
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Could you perhaps explain to our listeners what a "conscientious refuser" was and what exactly the penalty was?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Were you a "totaalweigeraar?"
Avatar 12:49pm
Peke:

een gewetensbezwaarde...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Did/do you have that in Belgium too, Peke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Why, yes, of course.
Up until 1993-4 there was the draft in the Netherlands. You had to go into the army. in the 60's 70's that was about 18 months. So you actually learnt something. In the time I had to come up, 1993, it was reduced to 9 months. So the only thing you learnt wa how to be cannon fodder. Besides, I already had decided when i was 18, (1988) I wanted to refuse to go into the army.
So I applied to be recognised as a conscientious refuser.
Avatar 12:52pm
Peke:

yup, we did
Avatar 12:52pm
Domenic:

Its "Conscientious objector" here in the USA. Refuser is nicer.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Did you do alternative community service, PK Or did you refuse that as well and did you have to go to jail? A friend of mine had to.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Domenic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

When I had to start my civil service, the alternative which was one whole year (as a punishment bc you didn't want to play with guns)
I had no choice where I could go. I was detached to Den Haag and worked there. I was put in a boarding house with bad food, and just had to leave my life in my city behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

I was not crazy. I think civil service was a reasonable alternative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

The thing was you almost had no control over your whereabouts and what you could and couldn't do. So in that aspect it was like serving in the army.
Avatar 12:54pm
Peke:

l went to do my year in the army...
biggest waste of time ever, and l had my ways to make sure they knew what kind of a man l was.... it resulted that l was not allowed to have a weapon .... :) ....
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Jan Turkenburg:

LOL, Peke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

I think civil service (vervangende dienst) could have been a great job opportunity. Were it not for it being a 'punishment'. Which is stupid.
Avatar 12:56pm
Peke:

l wanted to do something about the rabbit infestation on the airstrip that l was stationned at....

They did not like that idea at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Hahahaha! @ Peke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

That is a better way to get away from it all than putting peanut butter between your buttocks at the medical and eat it.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I was "lucky" when I was called for duty I happen to be admitted in a psychiatric hospital. I applied for a medical re-examination. My doctor said: I can send a letter, but if you want a free trip to The Hague be my guest. Just tell them where you live at the moment, that will be enough.
Avatar 12:58pm
Peke:

they should have let me, if l'm not mistaken, a couple years later, there was an incident where an aircraft got damaged because of a (lightweighted) rabbit on the runway
l had to refrain myself from writing a letter saying 'l told you so'....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@ Jan: so you didn't even need the pindakaas-trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

I worked in the State Archives, that was the better part of the job. I just was the postman but I loved all the proof of historic facts and stuff I saw.
Den Haag was Utter Hell.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Jan Turkenburg:

So I went to The Hague for a day, combined it with a visit to a museum, a restaurant and a porn movie, the latter being one of the biggest deceptions in my life.
Avatar 1:02pm
Domenic:

Don't see my galaxy pictured yet....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

IWhile working in the National Archives, I have held in my bare hands (no white gloves):
- Pacificatie van Gent (nl.wikipedia.org...)
- notebooks of Johan de Witt (en.wikipedia.org...)
- the death sentence of Balthasar Gerards (nl.wikipedia.org...)
and I have touched the Vrede van Munster. (nl.wikipedia.org...)
So that was nice.
Avatar 1:07pm
Mr Fab:

beaming down! Ahoy, Jan.

I'm curious, what was deceptive about the porn theater? They were actually holding church services or something?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Mr Fab, it was the cheapest of cheap productions I saw and they just played it in a loop, so you just fell in the middle of the "story".
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Jan Turkenburg:

The most exciting thing I remember was buying the ticket from a femal counter clerk about my age....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

That sounds as the beginning of the plot of a good Porn movie...
Avatar 1:12pm
Mr Fab:

PK: ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Porn: always watch it for the plot. Angrily write the producers when the story shows plot holes. Example of good plot (SFW): www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Jan Turkenburg:

@ Domenic, is there a Domenic Galaxy, or cluster?
Avatar 1:19pm
Domenic:

LOL a really big galaxy...
LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

(SFW in the sense that is not showing any real porn. NSFW where lingerie isn't SFW)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Okay next subject.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

hahahahahahahahaha
Avatar 1:21pm
Domenic:

Noticed you started with "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"...Reminded me there is a theory that Betelgeuse is going to explode soon. But not a hyperspace highway...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@ Domenic: I t already might have happened... Betelgeuse is 500-800 light years away.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Ah, PK you beat me to it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Which means we see the star like it was about 5-800 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Even when the sun suddenly would explode we would notice 8 minutes later.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Jan Turkenburg:

So all of us, except John Miles have 8 minutes left anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

John "one hit wonder" Miles, you mean? What a dragon of a tune, that was. Een draak van een deun.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Jan Turkenburg:

In retrospect, yes, but at the time I was 10 years old, I really thought it was amazing. Now I love Jan Rot's version of it. It's 32 seconds long :-) :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Haha! Dat wassem al weer! Lang genoeg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Nice live intermezzo.
