Awful.

By far, and it’s not even close, the 80’s were in every way the worst decade of popular music during the 20th century.

Don’t even get me started on the cultural aspects as they regard politics, pop culture, fashion, etc.

I rewatched almost all of Beavis & Butthead, videos and all, not too long ago, and one of the things that struck me the most is how many god-awful one-hit Nirvana ripoffs were running around MTV in those days. I told the uniformed commander that that guy needs to go back to the Academy because he clearly does not know the law ..

My Mom's long-gone cat used to love to use his teeth to shred plant leaves--only the very best expensive Japanese Lady Palms that my Mom kept--but he never showed any interest in eating them. OTOH he LOVED devouring any number of house mice, wood mice, voles, and sparrows (and sharing with Mommy). We'd get up (during my stretch at home after my last degree) and Mom would find various bits placed lovingly near the coffee maker (which he knew was the first thing that the first sentient adult in the house on any given morning would go for) but I digress.

Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

Or, per the late, great, Terry Pratchett: “The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

Threemoons - yeah, you get to a point when the scales tip, the old car isn't worth much and you just got to get a new used car. But our devoutedly loyal Corolla has only 52k on the clock and up until now has been pretty repair free, so I mustn't complain.

@Stanley surprised it's acting up at only 52K! A friend of mine drove her old Toyota from the EARLY 80's until it literally fell apart. As in the body was held together by duct tape and a prayer. For whatever reason Toyotas from that era seem to have lasted forever....

@Captain they don't total it partly via collusion from mechanics -- mechanics won't write off a total unless it's truly gone; you'll be a repeat customer as other secondary shit from the accident goes wrong....

@captain I mean my old Buick got rear-ended by a delivery truck and the trunk got mashed all the way into the back seat. Could NOT get a total ruling. They stretched out the metal, did a shitty job replacing the lights housings with some kind of fiberglass garbage (original body was steel which is why I wasn't hurt), did a shit job on the rear axle and rear alignment which ate up my tires twice until I had my Mom's mechanic do a proper alignment job back up by her in Rockland County (there was a pair of brothers who did ALL of the work for all of the broke teachers up there back in the day), and they never really DID fix the circuitry properly for my brake lights and turn signals (had to have a friend do re-wiring for me and put the proper fuses in--repair shop just jammed in whatever they had handy to fob the car back on me).

I didn't know "Sail Away" was about that. It's like "Big Rock Candy Mountain": originally about a hobo trying to lure a young man onto a box car so he could, uh, importune him, then it got bowdlerized to be a children's song. Originally it was about cigarette trees and rivers of whiskey.

Christopher E Raad: Yeah, Athena and Eminence Front (especially the soundcheck version they used for the MTV video) are favorites of mine too. I'm with you on a lot of their 70s stuff, never liked their prog turn too much. Everything up to The Who Sell Out is pure gold in my book though.
