Babyangel: It’s a series, collecting the wisdom of old folks in Appalachia, about the old ways. It’ll teach you how to churn butter, build a log cabin, or butcher a hog.

wow great any other recommendations about Appalachia? ty

Survival skills for when civilization collapses, in other words.

Authentic enough.. let's not forget Peter Rowan was mining this vein 40 years ago.
I was an avid Foxfire reader in my 7th grade, made soap in the back yard and dressed a rooster according to instructions.

When I'm not quite listening, the word "ethnomusicologist" sounds a lot like "FMUsicologist"

Ferrum College in SW VA has the largest store of this Appalachia folk in their Blue Ridge Institute archives. Check them out.

Wow, a premier on WFMU, don't get those often. Many times I find out about a "new" show and then it turns out it was new only to me. Best wishes on this one, subject matter's interesting.

Deffo been in touch with Ferrum, but thanks for the tip! :-)

Is Rounder still pressing records up in Floyd VA? I visited once- what a deal.

Thanks for the link, JakeGould! My most recent obsession was number stations. This is a rabbit hole I can see myself getting lost in for a while.
  8:34pm
Old Dave:

Incredible show. I worked as an intern at BRI with Roddy Moore while he was busy preserving this genre and also early African spiritual and work music.
The piercing quality is so fine.

Piercing is the best way to put it. Wish i'd had more time with Nicky.

My grandfather (in Boonville, NC), used to sing Frankie and Johnny. Absolute chills Derek. Thank you.

There's a great song about Yadkin Elk called the Triplett Tragedy that you should find. I shall include it in a future show

What's interesting / surprising is that all these people are actually pretty decent singers. Well, compared to me, at any rate.

Tommy in Neversink:

Gnomon.....I'm from Yakinville , NC. My mom ran a store in Boonville
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
McGroovey:

@HyperDose do numbers stations still exist? I suppose not. I suppose there are better ways to send secret messages now.

I had a shortwave radio when I was a teenager in the seventies. It's part of what inspired me to study Russian. Does shortwave radio still exist? Barely, i suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Tommy in Neversink:

My country , Yadkin , is next to Wilkes where the Tom Duley murder happened. I'm distantly related to Larua Foster, the victim
  8:44pm
Listener Robert:

So...you've been sharing this "territory" with Kevin Nutt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Yadkinville.....not Yakinville
  8:46pm
Listener Robert:

Actually, McGroovey, another comments thread linked to an article that said, indeed the numbers stations, on shortwave and elsewhere, do still exist, with some of them still transmitting their code by the same method, i.e. by voice.
  8:48pm
Old Dave:

These days, you can still find kitchen parties in Maritime Canada with this kind of sound.
It is amazing how it hangs on and keeps going in some families.
Avatar 8:48pm
HyperDose:

@Gnomon I have not. Was mostly researching for audio clips to sample. Looks interesting, thanks.
@McGroovey They do! A bunch are supposedly just old and infinitely broadcasting the same looped signals, perhaps a few are still used for spy communications?
Avatar 8:49pm
Richard S:

Sometimes I want to get a shortwave radio. I might next year - the AM radio I listen to Mets games on finally gave out.
Avatar 8:49pm
derekpiotr:

Oh to get to those parties sometime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Gnomon If you check out the CONET Site, they have one of the machines they used for transmitting the codes (in German) .. I use those samples in my app Enumero.
Avatar 8:55pm

We need one now for Kentucky.
