Mr Fab:

Jan, I was wondering - can anyone in The Netherlands pick up UK radio? If so, was that influential to Dutch music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jan Turkenburg:

We could pick up the old UK pirate stations, but the main station of influence was Radio Luxembourg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

But UK bands certainly were of influence in the rise of garage bands here. The bands hardly mastered the English langauge, just as their audience, so as long as it sounded English it was cool.

we're talking mid 60s

Hi Darryl!

is it just me, or does this track have a very Steely Dan vibe?
Avatar 12:25pm

sorry I'm late, I was listening to our Dear Leader spin his BS on TV
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I don't know Steely Dan as well as I should and I grew up with Kayak, long before i heard about Steely Dan, so ...
Avatar 12:27pm
Mr Fab:

Fascinating! thanks for the link, Jan.

Hey Darryl, I was thinking the vox were very Yes-ish. (Yes-esque?)
Avatar 12:28pm
worldsworstrecords:

maybe that's what it is, Mr F... there's definitely something recognisable about them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Jan Turkenburg:

just untill a few minutes before broadcast, I was listening to our Minister of Health, answering questions of critical and sometimes rather angry members of parliament.

Candy-O'67:

This BZN is a cool rendition!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, the early years of BZN were very good, before they went all 'schlager' with singer Annie Schilder

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Mr Oxford. U ook goedendag! :-)
  1:09pm
Mr. Oxford:

Jan, it is interesting you mentioned Radio Luxembourg. I remember listening to a Finnish punk song from the 80s which also makes a reference to the radio station. I have heard many older people from Scandinavia say they first heard the Beatles through that station. Seems to have been an influential station for the European region.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, also Godley and Creme mention RL in their song "Get Well Soon"
Avatar 1:14pm
worldsworstrecords:

Lux was massively important in the UK... we even had a weekly pop magazine, Fab 208, named after the station's wavelength
Avatar 1:15pm
worldsworstrecords:

WE didn't have a national pop radio station in the UK until 1967, so everyone listened to radio Luxembourg
Avatar 1:16pm
worldsworstrecords:

Most of the big name DJs of the 60s and 70s worked at Luxembourg before moving over to the BBC in '67
  1:17pm
Mr. Oxford:

Fascinating, Darryl. it is quite surprising the UK had the biggest pop music phenomenon of the era and yet a pop radio station did not surface until 1967.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Some famous Dutch DJs started at Lux as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

When were the first offshore stations in the UK, again, Darryl?
Avatar 1:19pm
worldsworstrecords:

mad, isn't it? Everyone listened to Luxembourg, and the Pirate Ships: Radio London, Radio Caroline and so on. The BBC had some pop programming, but it was really limited before the launch of Radio 1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Jan Turkenburg:

round 1964 wasn;t it?
Avatar 1:20pm
worldsworstrecords:

Well, people were listening to Luxembourg from the 50s, and yes, radio London first broadcast in 1964
Avatar 1:21pm
worldsworstrecords:

caroline started the same year... named after JFK's daughter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Radio Veronica (1959) started broadcasting pop music from 1964 on as well
  1:26pm
Mr. Oxford:

i know someone who had a rare vinyl of Radio Veronica jingles. that's the first time I came across dutch language/something dutch. One of the tracks was an ad by Mick Jagger saying 'you're listening to Radio Veronica'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, that was for the occasion of the Beatles and Stones marathon
  1:29pm
Mr. Oxford:

Or maybe it could have been someone doing a mimicry of Mick Jagger's accent/voice. can't remember anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Jan Turkenburg:

A lot of artists both national and international spent time (sometimes hours) in the Veronica Studios making jingles for the station. There is a famous recording, of Brian Wilson singing a multi track jingle he made up on the spot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It became one of the most used ones
  1:31pm
Mr. Oxford:

Jan that sounds wonderful.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

and instead of yeah yeah, he seems to sing "nou, nou, nou" as in "well, well, well, who would have thought..."
