	4:44pm prguitar: Beacon! Same area my friends have their guitar building and repair shop.. I worked with them until the pandemic locked everything down in mid March 2020.. Used to take Metro North to Beacon and stay up there a few days a week.. One of the friends grew up in the area. Many of his friends own guns.. Gun shops everywhere.. plus folks privately selling assault weapons.. The other friend used to live in Humboldt CA. It was scary for me too N.. Since everyone was growing weed up there, most folks were armed for 'protection'.

	5:06pm Franco Twinkie: The only time I've every been hit by a cop was in NYC. I was sick, wandering around in a snow storm, so I went into the big library on 5th avenue. I passed out on bench in the entryway and a cop hit me with his nightstick. I staggered back out into the snow. Admittedly, I looked like a bum.

	5:32pm Franco Twinkie: Weirdly, for all his legendary bad behavior, he was reportedly quite nice. Unless you had the misfortune to be in his band.

	5:35pm fred: @Franco: That's what I heard too. He was more than the drunk persona, though he played the part too
	5:39pm Franco Twinkie: What can I say? Performers are fluid people without an on/off switch. The constructed persona is an ideal that must be difficult to keep in check.
	5:44pm StringOFperils: I think Mark Smith was like the Francis Bacon of post-rock music. He knew a lot, and he had very specific ideas about what he wanted, usually while no one else was understanding. I remember reading this story he told about searching for the right engineers; he wanted the people who created Status Quo's albums, because they really got clarity and separation, and kicking punchy bass...which was funny because he was totally breaking rock music into shards...but he insisted the finely-crafted ugliness got the utmost care in the sonic dept. And the result remains unique (sorry, Pavement)

	5:53pm LadyChanticleer: Pavement. I dated so many guys in the age range of Pavement fandom and I just never adapted.
	5:54pm LadyChanticleer: Saw 'em live once and mostly hung out upstairs at the Fillmore drinking with a deadhead

	5:57pm Franco Twinkie: Very astute comparison SoP. Francis Bacon dismantled reality and put it back together inside out for a breathtaking effect. Mark's genius was literary - he deconstructed the English language and seamingly slapped in back together upside down. Or so it seemed. He was amazeinly consistent over his entire creative life.
	5:58pm StringOFperils: The Fall is kind of Magick I think. As much an incantation, an interruption in the field of reality, as anything. Never mesnt to be user-friendly.

	6:09pm Franco Twinkie: I tend to think of people like Mark as mediums. A true medium rarely flounces around like Morticia Adams, I think. Their power is an internal manifestation that is willed into life by discipline and control.

	6:18pm prguitar: Agreed N.! Upstate is really beautiful, depending where you are.. with real weather.. consistently 10° colder than NYC.. The light is also incredible! Unfortunately since the pandemic, it costs as much to live there as NYC.. especially Beacon.. my local friend remembers when no one would want to be anywhere in Beacon.. until Dia set up their exhibition space there. Many NYC visitors and international art world people.. Metro North stops within a short walking distance.. During the pandemic everyone that could, left NYC, and settled near Beacon, prompting local residents to put their houses on the market and sell for huge prices.. Finding a rental even if it's a hovel is next to impossible. At that point relocating wasn't very attractive..

Used to take Metro North to Beacon and stay up there a few days a week.. One of the friends grew up in the area. Many of his friends own guns.. Gun shops everywhere.. plus folks privately selling assault weapons.. The other friend used to live in Humboldt CA. It was scary for me too N.. Since everyone was growing weed up there, most folks were armed for 'protection'.

	5:44pm StringOFperils: I think Mark Smith was like the Francis Bacon of post-rock music. He knew a lot, and he had very specific ideas about what he wanted, usually while no one else was understanding. I remember reading this story he told about searching for the right engineers; he wanted the people who created Status Quo's albums, because they really got clarity and separation, and kicking punchy bass...which was funny because he was totally breaking rock music into shards...but he insisted the finely-crafted ugliness got the utmost care in the sonic dept. And the result remains unique (sorry, Pavement)

Mark's genius was literary - he deconstructed the English language and seamingly slapped in back together upside down. Or so it seemed. He was amazeinly consistent over his entire creative life.

	6:18pm prguitar: Agreed N.! Upstate is really beautiful, depending where you are.. with real weather.. consistently 10° colder than NYC.. The light is also incredible! Unfortunately since the pandemic, it costs as much to live there as NYC.. especially Beacon.. my local friend remembers when no one would want to be anywhere in Beacon.. until Dia set up their exhibition space there. Many NYC visitors and international art world people.. Metro North stops within a short walking distance.. During the pandemic everyone that could, left NYC, and settled near Beacon, prompting local residents to put their houses on the market and sell for huge prices.. Finding a rental even if it's a hovel is next to impossible. At that point relocating wasn't very attractive..
