At the risk of pedantry, a pedant is, originally, a schoolteacher. Maybe in this first calendar year without that great jazz pedant, Phil Schaap, we can all carry a little of the burden of pedantry that he shouldered alone.

Or maybe we’ve had our Phil.
  10:27am
Doug Schulkind:

The marching band didn’t have a name, but we did have an electric bass player. He would march around in full dress with all the other instruments, and there was another dude marching behind him, also in full costume, pushing a wheelbarrow containing an amp and a car battery. It was very metal.

@hyde, still have it, haven't pulled it out in ages, though. Great band!

I recommend both '90s Garcia/Grisman records and REALLY reccomenf "The Pizza Tapes" where Grisman hooks Garcia and Tony Rice up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Jeff Golick:

I LOVE those Garcia/Grisman records.

Thanks, @UM. I don't know the Pizza Tapes one.
If we play Seven Degrees of Separation from Jerry Garcia, is there anyone we can't connect?

Stork:

@hyde: we worshipped that record when we were kids. I lived down the block from Steve Kaufman as a kid, an astonishingly amazing picker who went on to be national flatpick champion for about 5 years in a row - till they kicked him out and made him a judge. He recorded with Vassar a couple times.

SOp, I see that both of my friends are on that Kaiser album. One of them, I gave the nickel tour of WFMU to.

LG, that box set sounds appealing (and I have all those albums on vinyl, but still...)

Love Vassar's records with Flatt & Scruggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am

We used to see Vassar in Aspen, Colorado in the early '70s. He had a residency at this one place. He might have actually lived there, then.

Peter Rowan played with Bill Monroe for a bit

Jim Flora cover art, Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am

I see Irwin had a hand in that cover art selection.

Back from usual Sunday morning errands, have been listening with minor distractions when dodging carts and strollers. Have xaught up with the comments. Just one question, Doug, what shade of aqua?

Some critique Grisman for the frequency of his Garcia referencing - but it sounds like he has every right. Called 'Pizza Tapes' cause the delivery guy snuck them out in a box to bootleg ?? Not to go too far down the FAQs DeadHole...
