That rumor is just burn into everyone's mind. It's been long since proven they have in fact play their own instruments, they played them live on stage with backup musicians like a lot of the acts of the day did. Mike and Peter were accomplished musicians, Peter even played a multitude of different instruments.Before the monkeys Mickey was in two of his own groups, one was called the missing links, and the other one was Mickey and the one-nighters. He played guitar. And even Davy was in a skiffle group. But despite of all that it will be forever ingrained in the world's consciousness repeating it in a mindless drone like fashion that they didn't play their own instrument's

@daikichi: Michael Lindsay-Hogg made music videos for the Stones as well as the Beatles. The idea was that these could be shown on TV (or in theaters) to promote new records when the bands weren't touring or making public appearances.
