Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from February 22, 2022 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

We used to do this show at KPSU in Portland many years ago... and this show is some of our best on-air moments. I'm providing the turntables and other samples, and Miss Rikki provided "word salad" from a variety of sources, including the computer and CD players.

For some reason, at PSU, I got a certain amount of free design work from the Design Department. So we commissioned the "logo" for "A Momentary Lapse of Reason: A Radio Almanac" from them.

We had two turntables, we had five CD players, we had a computer, an auxiliary cord that was often for my iPod, and a few other things... phone, six mics, etc...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks Krys O!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm

We had bands on a few times. We would play albums we didn't know and review them on the air, while the song was playing. This is only a small slice of our shenanigans.

I worked for the school that was attached to the radio station at the time. Since I had alluni status, I could have a show. So I would get off work, go to the nearest bar, prep for the show, then meet up with Rikki. We'd compare notes, and then we'd be on the air.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Austin Rich:

In the morning, before work, I would pick out a bunch of records and CDs, and email out the "theme" for the show. Then we'd veer WAY off theme, most of the time.
Avatar 9:17pm
Mr. X:

I'm a few minutes lagged, due to crappy Cottage Grove cable connection. My comments will all come too late, so bear with me.
Avatar 9:17pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:18pm

We both worked too much. This was sort of a "Brain Dump" in a a lot of ways.
  9:18pm
andrewBunny:

WTUL back in New Orleans had a great show in the 70s when I was just getting into music called Bizzare Radio. They'd play birdsong records, sound fx tracks, things like Discreet Music all at the same time. It was my fave radio show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm

Really enjoying the mix, Austin Rich. What year were you doing this again?
  9:29pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I loved doing college radio. I was on a talk show called Access. I was the resident "TAB" temporarily able-bodied person. The rest of the crew all had prominent disabilities. Our sound person was blind. One of our talk show hosts was deaf with a Cochlear implant. One had cerebral palsy. One was blind. We did a bunch of normalizing of student life with disabilities, talked about accommodations, and had different theme topics each week. We caught a lot of attention with our week on sexuality awareness and rights involving disabled students

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

That's so cool, Ellen! Any recordings?
Avatar 9:30pm
Mr. X:

My family used to watch Laugh-In every week. Flip Wilson was on it a lot. So I kind of grew up with Flip Wilson.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

Rikki and I would just look at each other, and gesture, "I've got something," and then the other would fade down. Then we'd just watch for when someone pressed "stop," and we'd start the next sample, whoever had something cued up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

I've a sucker for Flip. I think both Rikki and I bonded over Flip Wilson clips.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

Occasionally, I would go out into the lobby of the radio station, and grab whoever was there, ask them to go into the studio and speak on a random subject, and then turn on the mics. Then Rikki would mix music behind it.

We had a lot of fun gimmicks. Like I said: this is just a slice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

I made it a rule that nearly all the records I used for mixing were thrift scores.
Avatar 9:33pm

@Austin I used to have 2 cassettes, but I don't know where they are, possibly somewhere in storage. They used to be at my parents' house for safekeeping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

craziest setup we ever had: a dj was spinning in the live studio. we could hear him, but he couldn't hear us. our accompaniment was: 2 minidisc players, 2 turntables and a sampler. this mix was sent down to the on-air booth, where the on-air dj was also adding to the collage! those were the days...

Avatar 9:41pm

The Canadian punk band "PUP" showed up at KPSU one day, and no one showed up to host them. (The DJ flaked.) So we had them on the show, just because they were there.

Googling Tunacan Jones and his TopDollar Hour, not finding anything after 2018, Last I heard he was in Spokane.

Four Dimensional Nightmare, who has played on my show since I joined Sheena's, played on our show, and we have lovely, two-camera video of him performing. Just need to edit it.

Austin Rich:

He's on: tpgradio.com, under the name "David Camp" now.
Avatar 10:33pm
Miss Rikki:

Clearly a fake name

Still the Top Dollar Hour. He was a frequent collaborator of Ricardo Wang / What's This Called?

Where / what station was MLOR on?

Miss Rikki:

It was on KPSU

They didn't have the biggest range, but it was a utility that students and alluni could access.

Miss Rikki:

In Portland

Tunacan had this idea entirely, and prompted me for the questions to ask. We improved the rest of it.
Avatar 10:48pm
Miss Rikki:

I was not included on the decision, as I recall.

But you jumped in flawlessly, which I appreciated. You were very good at that.

There need to be more Kids In The Hall references.
Avatar 10:49pm
Miss Rikki:

I spoke Tunacan thankfully

I should have reversed that number! Don't call it! That's another station!
Avatar 10:50pm
Miss Rikki:

Or do and record the results.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Austin Rich:

I thought I cut that out. I forgot about that entirely on the re-listen.
Avatar 10:52pm
Miss Rikki:

We just won't speak of it again. What number?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Austin Rich:

Precisely.

I always get my astrophysics and philosophy from Pan Am, and my natural history from Reobert Redford.

It's the only way to learn. We were in college, after all.

I lied. I realize that this Parker album came from a co-worker, and not a thrift store. But most of the rest of the albums I brought were from thrift stores.

It was fun that you played the Redford wolf album, right while I was discussing a scene in a werewolf novel with an author

I love that Redford album, Ellen. It kind of soothing to listen to, for me.

I wish there was a bigger click when you hung up on people. That's my only complaint about KPSU.

I wanna thank Miss Rikki again. We've got about 5 minutes of stuff left. You were a great co-host, we did one of my favorite shows together, and I hope we do more, soon!

A few years after this, Arbys approached the author of BadSandwichChronicles at his day job with a puppy and two bags of roast beef sandwiches.

Whoah! That's hilarious!
Avatar 11:16pm

If you dig deep enough, you'll find the post where he tells the tale. There were Arbys Twatter posts about it at the time as well.

This is my favorite Dead Milkmen song. I knew a girl in Eugene - Honey Vizer - who used to do a heartbreaking version of this song.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Austin Rich:

It's funny: Rodney Anonymous favorited a post I made today, and I forgot entirely that I was playing a Milkmen song to close. Weird synchronicity.

Thanks again everyone!
