Hello Doug and Friday GTDS folks. Doug, the radiobox playlist says the last thing that played before you started was something by "Jeannie Robertson, John Maguire, John Strachan". Doesn't seem they would be doing the jazz funk rendering of what I think was a Donovan song. Can you add any info?

McNeill is a great example of someone who, instead of decamping to NYC at the first opportunity, remained at home - DC in his case - and perhaps surrendered exposure for (dunno?) attachment to roots (I have no idea).

Doubling reeds/sax and trumpet is actually fairly uncommon; I read somewhere that the embouchure needed for one, is very different from the other, making it a hard switch (Benny Carter did a great job playing both, until he got older and gave up the trumpet).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
What does "knowing how to play it" even mean? There is silence, and then you make sound. Nothing else needs to be said. He made sound in a variety of ways, including using a trumpet. What does that sound convey? How does it make one feel? What thoughts or memories does that sound conjure? Is the world different and possibly better as the result of that sound happening?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51am
doctorjazz:

True dat, Doug; not "knowing" how to play isn't necessarily an impediment to making interesting music. Arto Lindsay's guitar playing comes to mind. But sometimes it does sound like, as you say, he's generating sounds. On this track it is obvious he actually has some trumpet technique.

I am not sure why 2 is the golden number, so I looked it up on the web. I am no closer to knowing, though I did come across a TikTok video of a student who discovered that she had arrived late to every class, when reviewing the recordings of her lectures. However, a number of sites report the golden number is 1.618, which is the ratio between two areas that is particularly attractive. Or something. However, it would be hard to form a musical group with 1.6 musicians, I feel.
