	6:12pm Mr Fab: He couldn't pick out the man in the restaurant who's talking to him? I would guess it would be the man ON THE PHONE!
	🎸 ♥ 6:13pm Austin Rich: I mean, he probably just thought the guy on the phone was calling his wife. It is Valentine's Day.
	🎸 ♥ 6:15pm Austin Rich: As I mentioned in an episode of "Dimestore Revelations," Alan Ladd's business partner ran a series of restaurants under the name "Mayfair," before they started the production company that made these radio shows. Apparently, in the universe of Dan Holiday, this chain of restaurants continued.
	♥ 6:15pm HyperDose: I'd love to know more about the production process for these old shows. Assuming all of these were pre-recorded like audiobooks? Are there any live radio theater broadcasts?
	🎸 ♥ 6:17pm Austin Rich: For this particular series, it was all pre-recorded and produced for transcription discs. (Which could then be sent to stations, and replay them whenever they want.) They still did a lot of the recordings "live" (it wasn't easy to splice anything), but they had some room to edit in music and some basic SFX. But usually, even with that ability, they would try to do as much of it live as possible. With this show, it's hard to know what was live and what wasn't.

	🎸 ♥ 6:20pm Austin Rich: From descriptions of other shows I've read about: the music was probably on disc, and the FX and other things that happened every episode were on disc. That way, they could run the voices live, and supplement them with the other sounds. But I'm only guessing, based on other stuff I've read. I haven't found anything specifically about this show's production.
	🎸 ♥ 6:21pm Austin Rich: I have a few transcription discs I've gotten at yard sales and stuff. I have no idea what they sound like; I don't have access to a player anymore.
	🎸 ♥ 6:23pm Austin Rich: This episode in particular requires good sound production to pull of the clues and the pay off when Dan does the reveal here. With poor sound, I think there would be no way to actually have this story "land." Still: it was broadcast in mono. So it's only "high quality" in some respects.

Most of the interesting elements of the story revolve around the sounds, and sound recording technology, and works better in an audio environment. I think this is the episode where the show really finds its stride. As I understand it, there would be a machine playing music / FX (and run by someone pushing buttons), and the actors live in a room. Then they would record it all, and it would mix down to disc, live. As I understand it. I could be wrong.

	🎸 ♥ 6:30pm Austin Rich: Sound quality is not terrible this week for The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen, which varries wildly from episode to episode. But you can hear the disc crackling in the background, which I appreciate.

	🎸 ♥ 6:33pm Austin Rich: Crap, I'll have to go back and figure that out! I thought I had that easy to find, but I guess not.
	🎸 ♥ 6:34pm Austin Rich: Again, it's hard to precisely pinpoint the "era" that this is set in, but most in-show evidence seems to point to either during or just after WWII. (Which would track given the year that the show aired.)

	🎸 ♥ 6:36pm Austin Rich: The only reason I wonder about the era is that the stories of the Scarlet Queen certainly have an "early 1900's / late 1800's" flavor to them, and could be set more or less then, or through to the 1940s. But the occasional references to the "war" seem to imply WWII... though it could be WWI, upon reflection.
	🎸 ♥ 6:38pm Austin Rich: In these early episodes, they really play with the Phil and Red will they / won't they vibe, where you can't tell if they are gonna double cross each other, or kiss each other, at pretty much every turn. There's usually a woman involved when they are really getting at each. In later episodes, their antagonism doesn't seem to be a plot mechanic anymore.

	🎸 ♥ 6:41pm Austin Rich: Phil must know how to dress a wound from his days fighting in "the war." Most soldiers would learn how to field dress a would like that.
	🎸 ♥ 6:44pm Austin Rich: There are so many moments where the music cues and accents veer into racist territory. (Knowing that there were, most likely, no Asian cast working on this show.) I don't apologize for the show, but only point out that this has a few similarities to the part of "Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom" where Indy goes to the bar in China, and there's singers performing, and other racial stereotypes in place. Though the similarities end there.

But the sort of "ongoing" nature to it (not exactly a serial, but containing a larger narrative) appealed to me. It sort of didn't matter that the larger story almost never really developed much, and was mostly implied. But I still found it interesting, and it scratched that "international adventure" itch I didn't know I had.

I have tried to edit out all the White King Soap stuff, as the announcer turns to the audience and does spots for the soap all the time. Unfortunately, the commercial ads contain the Korla Pandit live organ music behind them, so they are interesting to listen to... but incredibly annoying, as ads. Since these were daily, I also cut out all the references to the show being daily.
	🎸 ♥ 7:25pm Austin Rich: "How did we get to Egypt so soon?" They completely side-step the explanation, and how the audience didn't miss anything, by just saying that they haven't explained it yet... But old listeners to the show from the 30's probably have a guess as to what happened...

	🎸 ♥ 6:36pm Austin Rich: The only reason I wonder about the era is that the stories of the Scarlet Queen certainly have an "early 1900's / late 1800's" flavor to them, and could be set more or less then, or through to the 1940s. But the occasional references to the "war" seem to imply WWII... though it could be WWI, upon reflection.
	🎸 ♥ 6:38pm Austin Rich: In these early episodes, they really play with the Phil and Red will they / won't they vibe, where you can't tell if they are gonna double cross each other, or kiss each other, at pretty much every turn. There's usually a woman involved when they are really getting at each. In later episodes, their antagonism doesn't seem to be a plot mechanic anymore.

	🎸 ♥ 6:44pm Austin Rich: There are so many moments where the music cues and accents veer into racist territory. (Knowing that there were, most likely, no Asian cast working on this show.) I don't apologize for the show, but only point out that this has a few similarities to the part of "Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom" where Indy goes to the bar in China, and there's singers performing, and other racial stereotypes in place. Though the similarities end there.

But the sort of "ongoing" nature to it (not exactly a serial, but containing a larger narrative) appealed to me. It sort of didn't matter that the larger story almost never really developed much, and was mostly implied. But I still found it interesting, and it scratched that "international adventure" itch I didn't know I had.

Unfortunately, the commercial ads contain the Korla Pandit live organ music behind them, so they are interesting to listen to... but incredibly annoying, as ads. Since these were daily, I also cut out all the references to the show being daily.
