In a career that spanned six decades, Elza Soares (1930-2022) released some three dozen culture-shifting albums, becoming a national icon and international superstar. This tribute will touch on a bit of everything, from her early samba and samba-soul records of the 1960s and 70s to lesser-known gems from the 80s and 90s to her innovative, Grammy-winning work of the 21st century.

yup. quite a life: "Elza was deemed dangerous by the Military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) and in 1970, her house in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, was machine-gunned by regime agents. Inside were her partner Garrincha and their children. The living room, where the young children were, was destroyed by the blasts. She and Garrincha had to flee to Italy, where they were received by Chico Buarque de Hollanda also in exile."

Just read Soares bio on Wikipedia. An amazing women with a tragic childhood and young adult hood. Can't imagine getting married at 11 years of age. This is an amazing collection of her work Gary.

@headcleaner: that happened to most of the tropicalistas. It seems like Tom Ze was the only one that didn't leave Brazil, althoughh he kept a lower profile and started doing more 'oddball' music, and thus the military thought he was not a threat w/o the larger audience.

TDK60 - well she doesn't fit in the Bossa + Tropicália buckets (which are what most of us Anglos, for generally good reasons, listen to). If anything her roots are in more "traditional" (whatever that means) Samba. And in the huge territory of MPB, which most anglos/hipsters don't listen to either.

It's funny - if you actually listen to Brazilian radio stations, they almost don't sound you'd think Brazilian music sound like (if all you've been feeding yourself is Bossa + Tropicália ... and all the weird stuff we hear on this station). It is of course wall-to-wall pop, and full of a whole lot of names you've never heard of.

MPB = Música Popular Brasileira and is a pretty broad term meaning exactly what it says. And which the tropicalists were not so much against, but felt had become inert (along with Bossa) and were reacting to.
