Cate Le Bon  Crab Day   Favoriting Crab Day  Drag City  2016  "Cate Le Bon is an artist hailing from Carmarthenshire, rural West Wales. Cate Le Bon’s solo work has always resisted pigeonholing, walking the tightrope between krautrock aloofness and heartbreaking tenderness; deadpan served with a twinkle in the eye, a flick of the fringe and a lick of the Telecaster." Sparks  Complaints   Favoriting Kimono My House  Island Records  1974  This song is for anyone who has worked in a call center, retail or customer service. It's a living. English singer and Smiths frontman Morrissey has frequently cited Kimono My House as one of his favorite albums and famously wrote a letter to the NME, at the age of 15, extolling its virtues. He later told the Mael brothers that it had been a key influence on him deciding to embark upon a music career. In 2010, Morrissey included it in a list of his 13 favorite albums of all time for The Quietus.Icelandic singer Björk has also named the album as one of her all-time favorites.Steve Jones, guitarist and composer for the Sex Pistols, also hailed the album, recalling that in 1974, "The first Be-Bop Deluxe album, Axe Victim, and Sparks' Kimono My House were both big albums for me and Cookie [Paul Cook]. We'd sit in his bedroom for hours listening to them".    0:08:35 (Pop-up)
Koizilla  I Hate My Job   Favoriting Nightzilla  trace/untrace  2021  In a thrilling turn of events that I assume unfolded exactly like Jeff Goldblum's transformation in The Fly, bands Koizilla and Night Lunch emerge from their telepod grasping the NightZilla EP. A hooning 12" fusion of noisy Ōtepoti tracks, Koizilla have loaded up side A with three massive, off-kilter surf-rock epics, an exciting development since the fuzzy garage goodness of their 2020 album I Don't Surf I Boogie. On the flip side, Student Radio Network award winners Night Lunch aka Liam Dorf and Liam Hoffman barrel through five monstrous cuts of brilliant doom cacophonies and wry lyricism.    0:11:19 (Pop-up)
Bodega  Everybody's Sad   Favoriting Thrown Single  What's Your Rupture  2022  New York's Bodega are back with a new tune, the B-side to their single "Thrown", which is also pretty great! They are touring the UK in March. This song just goes to show that even though things look perfect on the outside...appearances can be deceiving. We are all dying a little, inside.  *   0:15:05 (Pop-up)
The Cool Greenhouse  Life Advice   Favoriting The Cool Greenhouse  Melodic  2020  TCG's self titled album is a gift that just keeps on giving. Who hasn't a) found themselves at a jumble sale and pondered the meaning of why we accumulate a bunch of garbage in our lives, and b) received unsolicited stupid advice from well-meaning strangers?    0:16:36 (Pop-up)
Bonaparte/Sophie Hunger  Reverse Gaslighting   Favoriting 1 EP  Bonaparte & Sophie Hunger  2021  Swiss Born Sophie Hunger has been performing now for over two decades and she returns with this collaboration with Bonaparte for a 4 song EP. It's a bit hit and miss with a confusingly bland version of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House...but this tune and "Pigeons" stand out! Bonaparte is another swiss electronic rock producer, known for pointedly socially critical lyrics..and oddly...also celebrates hedonism?    0:20:32 (Pop-up)

He's not just Okay...he's GREAT! Temiz was influenced in his early years by his mother, Naciye, who was classically schooled in music. Temiz started playing professionally in 1955,[ studying at the Ankara Conservatory and at the Tophane Art Institute. After meeting Maffy Falay and Don Cherry, he settled in Sweden. With Cherry and bassist Johnny Dyani he toured US and Europe in 1971. In 1972, he founded the band Xaba with Dyani and trumpeter Mongezi Feza.[ His drums are of his own invention, and are constructed using hand-beaten copper, in the style of Turkish debuka's.

Blurt  The Fish Needs A Bike   Favoriting The Fish Needs A Bike 7"  Armageddon Records  1981  "---Origin - the short version: This feminist slogan has often been attributed to either Gloria Steinem but was in fact coined by Irina Dunn in 1970. Origin - the full story "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" is often attributed to the American feminist and political activist Gloria Steinem, or to the American feminist and political activist Flo (Florynce) Kennedy, or to an anonymous author who painted the slogan on a wall at the University of Wisconsin in 1969 (who we might also assume would have been an American feminist and political activist). A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle Gloria Steinem had this to say in a letter she wrote to Time magazine in autumn 2000: "In your note on my new and happy marital partnership with David Bale, you credit me with the witticism 'A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.' In fact, Irina Dunn, a distinguished Australian educator, journalist and politician, coined the phrase back in 1970 when she was a student at the University of Sydney. She paraphrased the philosopher who said, 'Man needs God like fish needs a bicycle.' Dunn deserves credit for creating such a popular and durable spoof of the old idea that women need men more than vice versa."---" Blurt therefore, take this sentiment and try it out in a few different scenarios, all equally cryptic and ridiculous. Lyrics sites on the internet insist one of the lyrics is: "And the bike needs a big bucket full of Japanese phlegm / And the Japanese phlegm needs the businessmen"... But to my ear it sounds like a bucket full of clams. Makes more sense to me. Less phlegm, more clams is my motto.    0:32:04 (Pop-up)
No Means No  Under The Sea   Favoriting One  Alternative Tentacles  2000  Rob and John Wright, are the siblings behind this legendary punk/indie band formed in 1979 in Victoria, BC. Egyptian Blue  Salt   Favoriting Salt Single  Yala! Music  2021  Egyptian Blue are a band from Brighton, UK. “We have an ordained member in the band and also a shady Jeweller. (Not the same member)” Their agreed karaoke song of choice is "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Egyptian blue, also known as calcium copper silicate (CaCuSi4O10 or CaOCuO(SiO2)4 (calcium copper tetrasilicate)) or cuprorivaite, is a pigment that was used in ancient Egypt for thousands of years. It is considered to be the first synthetic pigment. It was known to the Romans by the name caeruleum. After the Roman era, Egyptian blue fell from use and, thereafter, the manner of its creation was forgotten. In modern times, scientists have been able to analyze its chemistry and reconstruct how to make it.    0:53:35 (Pop-up)
Leggs  On Killing A Swan Blues   Favoriting Doomswayers EP  Leggs  2020  I like the title of this EP. It's my kind of clever. In September 2019 Legss emerged with their genre-bending debut EP Writhing Comedy. Comprised of four tracks, the release fused an unfamiliar set of influences into its own coherent, idiosyncratic strand of guitar music, “its stabbing, urgent musicality setting the group apart from their peers”. They are from London.    0:56:54 (Pop-up)
Lazarus Kane  Milk At My Door   Favoriting Psychobabble EP  So Young Records  2021  Lazarus Kane was a group. They broke up in Oct of 2021 after a handful of singles and some press love. In NME, the leader of the band...a guy named Ben,apparently said: “I like to entertain people, get a reaction. Some people love it, some people really hate it – if that happens, I feel like I’m doing my job,” he muses. “I don’t want people to feel indifferent about it. I like subverting people’s expectations about what entertainment can be: like, why do you pay money to go see something? It’s a transaction. I like messing with people.” NME can vouch for that. “I’d say I’m an artist first, an entertainer second, and a considerate lover third.” Also, he says he's from Arizona...but he's not.    1:00:01 (Pop-up)
Deep Tan  Beginner's Krav Maga   Favoriting Beginner's Krav Maga Single  Practise Music  2022  Bab's new favourite band is this fearsome feminist London based trio and this is a song about Krav Maga. Exercise is a great way to get your complaints and stress out. Krav Maga. In case you didn't know, Krav Maga is a military self-defense and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces and Israeli security forces derived from a combination of techniques sourced from Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Aikido, and Karate. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.    1:02:47 (Pop-up)

They recruited two other former Glaxo Babies members, Charlie Llewellin (drums) and Dan Catsis (bass), as well as ex-Pop Group member John Waddington (guitar).[ The band's influences were later described by Wrafter as "jazz, reggae, funk and punk, soul, hip-hop (the Last Poets, Afrika Bambaataa and the Sugarhill Gang), dub and ambient. The Fall  Couples Vs Jobless Mid 30's   Favoriting New Facts Emerge  Cherry Red Records  2017  The last true epic from their swansong album. Mark E Smith, who passed Jan 24, 2018 was the only constant though their 40 year career, and has often been characterized as a volatile, grumpy man with a sharp tongue and savage wit. This song would be the response to a challenge asking to condense half the Fall's catalogue into a near 9 minute pastiche of psych, old-school heavy metal, musique concrete, mock-operatic backing vocals, rockabilly riffs, caustic barbs, cryptic observations & abstract dada. At turns inviting, terrifying, hilarious, nearly impenetrable & almost catchy, it is the most difficult answer to the question: "Well, what do they generally sound like?"    1:18:03 (Pop-up)
The Ex  Dead Fish   Favoriting Dead Fish EP  Ex Records  2004  Title track from a 10" EP (eventually released on CD w/ a presumed lost bonus track.) Prolapse  Dunblane Hydro   Favoriting Havock Junction: Sorted Records Sampler  Sorted Records  2001  A track so obscure you probably can't find it on a mainstream streaming platform, nor on YouTube. (Feel free to look it up on YouTube, but be warned in advance about the results you will get.) "Recorded in a garage in Camden Town on a wet Sunday sometime in the mid 90's." Prolapse were a criminally overlooked band that were standouts from the 90's era. What could be better than a man fighting for space in excellent songs to shout at the world? A woman and man fighting for space in excellent songs to shout at each other and/or at the world together.    1:29:52 (Pop-up)

Cherry Red Records

2017

The final track from their swansong album. Ostensibly about being an orphan, growing up, being told not to break rules; and falling short of a perfect mark. This finds a seemingly endless guitar riff stuttering its way through starts & stops and three minutes of a shouting Mark E Smith. These are the sole elements of this 8 minute, 48 second final track of The Fall's remarkable 40-year discography. It is a fitting end for an incredible band and a "God Like Genius" of a man. Mark E Smith accepts & slags off the NME's "God Like Genius" award.

Bananagun  Do Yeah   Favoriting Do Yeah Single  Anti-Fade Records  2019  Bananagun are from Melbourne and make excellent modern Tropicalia with all the right references, from Os Mutantes to The Monks. (not the drugs in my pocket Monks...the other Monks...the good one) They are also very philosophical in their approach to life and finding self happines...Bananagun are first and foremost a band enthused with the joy of living and The True Story of Bananagun is a ebullient listen; van Bakel - as the main songwriter - is keen not to let any lyrical themes overpower that. There’s more to this record than blissed out grooves and tripped out fuzz though: The Master is about learning to be your own master and resisting the urge to compare yourself to others; She Now addresses gender identity and extolls the importance of people being able to identify how they feel. Then there’s closing track Taking The Present For Granted, which perhaps sums up the band’s ethos on life, trying to take in the world around you and appreciating the here and now. A keen meditator, van Bakel says of the track: “so often people are having a shit time stuck in their own existential crisis, but if you get outside you head and participate in life and appreciate how beautiful it all is you can have a better time.”    1:44:50 (Pop-up)
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard  Trapdoor   Favoriting Paper Mache Dream Balloon  Flightless/ATO Records  2015  This is the song that made me love KGATLW, and arguably launched them into the collective consciousness. It sounded like very little else at the time...and that was refreshing indeed! This album is absolute perfection. Flutey, dreamy, psychedelic...this tune examines the darkest demons of all...our own inner critics and fears. FREE YOURSELF! Don't fall through the trapdoor!    1:47:52 (Pop-up)
Metronomy/MGMT  The Look (MGMT Remix)   Favoriting The Look Single  Because Music  2021  MGMT's brilliant take on a brilliant song from a brilliant album. It's perfect. You're never stuck in one town...you can always get away...and things can always get better than this. What's that old saying, wherever you go, there you are? You can make peace with your town...if you make peace with yourself. There's also cheerfulness to be found in melancholy.    1:50:33 (Pop-up)

He creates a unique sound by combining the sounds of harpsichord, strings, flutes and other classical instruments with raw psychedelic effects. This tune is a great way to end our crabby set...because while it's fun to be crabby for a while...you'll live longer and better if you just let that shit go. Love yourself, be kind to yourself, and live your life in the sunlight, on the beach, with friends. It's the way to be.    1:58:55 (Pop-up)

Derek Westerholm:

Kat, yes, the Post-Punk & Industrial museum... It sounds fantastic! They were giving haircuts on Thursdays, they've had whiskey breakfasts, but more than that they have ephemera of all kind; but also elaborate setups like the actual tape & tape machine that was actually used for a Killing Joke track + a mixing board so you can mix the track yourself. Or actual percussion/pieces of metal/etc. that The Test Department used which you can also play. He is being overwhelmed by donations from all kinds people, artists & fans... The museum is growing by the minute, and Martin Atkins has been DIY-ing the whole thing. He has been DIY-ing a museum! It sounds quite wild...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm
DJ Babs:

Lazarus Kane is interesting, released a couple of singles, got some press love and then broke up, lol. Their singer pretended to be from Arizona. But was not.
