Oh snap...one of my old faves, Sugar and Water, closed. That place was aces for holiday/news/spur of the moment local news related donuts. Like, when there was the huge tranformer fire (including arc fires, where the air literally burns), the news called it "The Astoria Borealis" because it really did light up the night sky for miles. The very next morning, they had on their I-Gram "Astoria Borealis Donuts" for sale -- fancy donuts filled with blueberry jam creme and topped with a rich sky-blue glaze and dipped in a mix of every single blue sprinkle, dregee', metallic sprinkle, and crystallized sugar that they had.

It's also a sort of outer boro blue collar one-upmanship out here...."Me? STARBUCKS? Nah, I like my DUNKIN." I actually dislike both. OTOH DD has the BEST BEST BEST unsweetened iced coffee and will cheerfully put tons of lemon in it for you. There's a huge, very well run one between me, Mt. Sinai on 30th Avenue, and my local post office. When I have to go to either during the summer, I get a huge freaking bucket of unsweetened iced tea with like 5 lemon wedges for a buck fifty and drink it en route. Bracing and it seems to be the one product that is consistent between franchise locations.

@Queems that is a sweet memory! If you are ever near Sinai again -- my PCP is there and I get my ultrasounds/mammos there -- check out the huge newish DD. I give the owner credit for being smart enough to lock in the franchise space when they were still building out the hospital. Now, it's litereally a 4-register, 12+ employee assembly line ALL DAY. They give 20% off to hospital staff, and they are NEVER NOT super busy, but the line moves with absolutely Teutonic precision and speed.

I missed out on the Bowie donut though. Sadly, had to commute into the City that dark morning and had no time to detour 10 blocks for a donut. OTOH Astoria Coffee had already changed its dueling tip jars to both say "BOWIE" which was a nice touch.
