A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The woman will come out
And will come out from anyone
The woman is you.

Of the suitcase of the guy who destroyed you and filled you with pain
Of the girl who suffered so much and died without a lair
Of the hurting boy who did not find a way out."

I don't know how you do it, morph. The police-state intrusive securitization of air travel *before* the pandemic and all the stress crazies it evoked in people already required that I steel my nerves to the utmost to get on planes. In this brave new world? The mind, it quails.

"Am I that which I observe or that which observes me?. . . If I am my thoughts, then I could be anything from chicken soup to a pair of scissors, a crocodile, a corpse, a leopard or a pint of beer. If I am my feelings, then I am love, hate, irritation, boredom, happiness, pride, humility, pain, pleasure, and so on and so forth. If I am my body, then I am a foetus to a middle-aged woman changing every second. Yet, like everybody else I yearn for an identity although this yearning mystifies me always. If there is a true individual identity I would like to find it, because like truth on discovery it has already gone"

People forget how closely Communism was integrated with Soviet politics. The American party line was for Hitler until Gemany invaded and it promptly did a 180 against Hitler.
The Soviet Politburo was officially in charge of all Communist organizations. When a guy named Browder tried to Americanize Communism, he got booted out of the Party.
The only path as a Communist was becoming like the Soviet Union, authoritarianism and all. Americans embraced Communism not for what stood for, but as an alternative to capitalism and America's sins.

people on a crowded Moscow metro.. a man reading Pravda gives a chuckle.
The man next to him asks "Comrade, what is funny?" The man says "It says here 'The Bear' will eat America, but here, the Bear eats us." The other man says,"That is a funny comparison. I ask you, you see that man over there? What is the difference between that man and yerself?" The guy says "I don't know..." The other man says, "That man is going home to his wife and children - YOU"RE COMING WITH ME...."

As to who "started it," who invaded Crimea in 2014? Poke the Russian bear? We are bending over backwards to avoid active conflict while Putin constantly raises the temperature.
It would also be instructive to look at how *Russians* have fared since the fall of the Soviet Union.
As to trade with vile despotic states, don't worry! We already do that, all the time, every day. (Although I find your inclusion of Iran curious as it is the GOP that is dead set on stymying any progress in that area.)

Our government has telegraphed that we are not going to participate in an active war because it would be an absolute atrocity for all involved. Putin doesn't care; he must distract from his failures and preserve regional hegemony no matter the cost.
@Mike W: the right loves Putin because he hates gays, immigrants, democratic governance and vaunts traditional hierarchy. The Russian state also funds right wing movements.
