Mr Fab:

He got "sapped."
  6:07pm
Listener Robert:

If you've ever seen "Lost" and found it perplexing, I can explain what it was REALLY about, though I still don't have a complete solution.

Damon and his father did have a lot of apparently spontaneous encounters with 23s. But then Damon stocked "Crossing Jordan" with them deliberately.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Austin Rich:

Most of the accepted definitions of the word "gunsel" involve some homosexual connotation, but I find it funny how some "noir" settings try to re-contextualize it as "thug with gun." I'm sure it was difficult ot be more overt, but when I hear the word "gunsel" I'm sure there were other meanings that were not obvious.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Austin Rich:

I think I'd be more angry, if I'd been sapped like Dan was. But then again, writers will go to funny lengths for a story, am-I-rite?

  6:12pm
Listener Robert:

Until I saw the discussion about "gunsel" w.r.t. Dashiel Hammett (or maybe in was Raymond Chandler, I forgot), I'd thought it was a Yiddishism related most literally to geese.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Austin Rich:

Is there a yiddish origin I didn't know? How funny!
  6:13pm

The differing amount people can resist blows to the head turns out to be a plot point of "Lost".

I'm not sure, but is rowing 10 miles a lot or not? I never did anything like that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm

I feel like a lot of "pulpy" things used to happen on Lost. That was one thing I liked: when it leaned into the comic book / pulp stuff.

I don't really know if it's from Yiddish either.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Austin Rich:

@John R: I really wanted to try and recreate the feel of how these would have been heard on the radio. But I really didn't want to use real commercials.

I've had to write a million fake commercials over the years for different projects. They sort of come out naturally.
  6:18pm
Listener Robert:

Yes, Mr. Rich, "Lost" took a lot from comic books, but also a lot from Arthur Conan Doyle, movie serials, Shakespeare, real world conspiracies and swindles, magic tricks, zombie lore, and "Department S", plus a bunch of other stuff I either did or didn't know Damon and his father were interested in. See users.bestweb.net...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm

I'll have to dig into that link, @Listener Robert. I was thinking about watching some Lost again, after all these years.

I was thinking of asking different folks I know to do some ad reads. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
  6:20pm
Listener Robert:

I'll say the proper attitude to watch "Lost" from the beginning is distrust -- of EVERYBODY, including the characters and the camera.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Austin Rich:

I think you're onto something, @Listener Robert. I also think: don't take to too seriously. Just watch and enjoy. I think the people who ended up feeling burned by any TV show were people who took the show too seriously. It's just TV. Have fun, enjoy.

Unless it's Max Headroom. Then I take that show VERY seriously.

  6:25pm
Listener Robert:

It's for people who like playing detective. Turns out it was only disguised as a sci-fi/fantasy show. All the fantasy elements were fake. So were most of the non-fantasy elements and sci-fi. The only actual sci-fi in the show was based on the real-world work of Michael Persinger -- i.e. mind control.

I know I have speculated in the past that, due to various references in the scripts, that it's hard to pinpoint exactly which "War" these stories take place after. However, after the last re-listen I did last week, I'm pretty sure that this is meant to take place after WWII.

Still, there's a lot of references to different port cities and sailing that is pretty timeless. I suspect that the WWII references might have been put in to keep the story "current."

I guess it's an honor to be playing a part described as sounding like Charles Laughton.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm

Mr. Scharpling wasn't connected to it at that time, but we can count connections in any temporal order. Once Damon told me about that, I turned him on to "7SD". He especially appreciated one of "Andy's puppet" episodes -- "I'm just a little girl."

Heh. But you don't realize what that scene concealed. That was no afterlife, it was a meeting that occurred BEFORE most of the action depicted on the show.

I'm waiting for the copyright to expire so I can publish "Red Harvest of Replicants" in the style of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies". But first I'll have to write it. Or somebody will.
