Beyond the Gilded Stage is so wonderful. Reduced me to tears. And the dude from Rage Against the Machine figuring out how Geddy Lee would move the mic with his nose is really endearing.

And feel how you want about that band and their naive politics, but they loves one another. And cared deeply.

I watched the Karen Dalton documentary this week. That really blew me away. I recently turned a positive corner with Karen's music so the doc really cinched Karen Dalton fandom for me.

As illogical as this sounds, I struggled with Karen's voice for a long time. I really can't handle the modern indie pop, ukulele strumming Billie Holliday cooing that seems pretty ubiquitous. I confused my dislike for something current and contrived with Karen's authentic delivery.

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song also carries writing credits for k.d. lang and Ben Mink. The song is known for its chorus, which sounds strikingly similar to lang's 1992 hit song "Constant Craving". Jagger and Richards claimed to have never heard the song before, only having discovered the similarity prior to the Stones' release. As Richards reported in his autobiography Life, "My daughter Angela and a friend were at Redlands and I was playing the record and they start singing this totally different song over it. They were listening to k.d. lang's 'Constant Craving.' It was Angela and her friend that recognized it."The two gave Lang credit, along with her co-writer Mink. Lang said she was "completely honored and flattered" by receiving the songwriting credit.

"Five years later, I got a call from the Rolling Stones’ management. They’d written a song called Anybody Seen My Baby, but Keith Richards’ daughter had told him, “Dad, that’s Constant Craving!” They were real gentlemen about the similarity and gave us songwriting credits. When I was a kid in garage bands playing Stones songs, we used to joke: “One day the Stones will cover one of ours.” So to have a credit reading Jagger/Richards/Lang/Mink is a childhood dream that I still can’t believe actually happened."

It was Keith who ultimately acknowledged that he must have “absorbed” Constant Craving without realizing it, heard it in clubs or the radio or whatever here and there without ever even learning the son’s name. So it wasn’t exactly a George/Chiffons thing, but something similar.

Apropos of nothing, I heard something today that's been in brain attic for 30 years, Ofra Haza, "Im Nin'Alu" Seems like it would be in SBB wheelhouse, being a mashup of Israeli and Yemeni folk traditions. If you look around on YouTube you can see the 80's hit dance version but also a folky arrangement from 1979. Ofra Haza was called the "Israeli Madonna" but her voice is far better. There's said to be a TV commercial in which the children sneak the dishwashing liquid into the bath, and are later caught by a parent who walks in on them, upon which the child throws the suds into the air, saying, "It's snow!" in Farsi, "Barf" being the brand of detergent and also the Farsi word for "snow". I've never found that video online, but read of it in the Wall Street Journal, I think.

@Will amen. Some of my best memories of music are concert trips together. Or having a friend over, sitting down and putting a record on for them and listening together or vice versa at their place. I don’t know if it was CDs or MP3s later on, but it feels like that was lost starting in the 80s and 90s. WFMU fills a huge part of that void.
