The Mattiel show was excellent. Sound was really spot-on, and their energy was fantastic. Young crowd! Chatted with the band a bit after the show (and got a signed [baby blue!] 7"), and they were so glad to be on the road and in NYC. Talked a little radio, too, and let them know that WFMU loves them. AND we caught the bus immediately when leaving!

I love "Beatles For Sale", I got it for Christmas when the UK reissues finally came to the US. There's a certain feel to it that I really love, and you hear some of the covers they used to play and tear the roof off those Hamburg clubs. A very underrated album, mostly because people say "too many covers".

Writer Tim Riley calls 'Beatles For Sale' the Yin between two Yang movies. That it's downcast in the very midst of Beatlemania is interesting in itself. 'I'm A Loser', 'Baby's In Black' - depth & darkness coming in, imho - as Robyn Hitchcock says - awareness of Dylan & Stones already showing... RubberSoul gets all the cred for being FolkRawk - but as McGuinn noted, TheBeatles were blending them from the start...

I remember -- I must have been 8 or so -- Pat Boone had a midday Mike Douglasy talk show and had his daughters ("the Monkees played by the Boones -- here are the Baboones" -- play Valleri. I don't remember how credible the cover was.

Credit to the guitarist for trying to replicate Louis Shelton's amazing guitar solos on Valleri...they were close but not quite there! The funny thing about Valleri is how DJ's recorded the original version (no horns) off the TV and played it on the air because demand was so high. I have a tape of this happening on KHJ in LA from '67, pretty cool.

@Dano59 just read you're seeing TMBG later this month. Are they actually back on tour? I have tickets for the Flood "30th" anniversary show in June, the 5th postponement. Flood made me a hardcore fan, saw them first of many times doing mostly Flood in 1990 at the Knitting Factory.

@dk: This is a twice-rescheduled show from March 2020; in Ithaca. I interviewed John F. in advance of that in Jan. '20
(which I need to re-edit for rebroadcast) ... at the time only Buffalo and Ithaca 'Flood' shows hadn't sold out. I'm not sure the concept/format of the show is the same, but then again, the merch will probably reflect the Flood focus.
